Some of the places I deer hunt dont have motels available during most of the pheasant season, so there's that too.

I've stayed in a lot of $45 hotel rooms on fishing trips. I can't say I've found one yet that was real comfortable. Having the same bed waiting for you each night counts for lot. Does it count enough to make up the $$$... only you can decide. That goes for "needing" a $70k fishing boat, too, but a lot of people make that leap and then stay in $45 hotel rooms... go figure!

Do those cabovers have ac? If so how do they power them?

They have a/c, generator or electrical hook up. My only problem is the price on them. WAY to expensive for me. I want one, but I only want to pay around 5K for one. Those are mostly older early 2000's models and been beat to hell. The new ones run high teens to 30K. My wife wont sign off on that. Might as well get a nice bumper pull and have the wife pull the boat.

I currently have a 2016 Lance 825 cabover I use on my F250 crewcab 4x4. I had a Ranger Z521 and currently have Z520. I have airbags on the the truck which REALLY improves the handling on the highway especially when 18 wheelers pass you. I can tell you while the 825 is rated to go on a half ton but there is no way I would recommend it. I have weighed the truck without and with the camper and am right at the top of the 10,000 lbs truck GVWR spec without loading it up with water. Putting it on a half ton would overload the truck regardless of what the camper manufacturer says. Weigh your truck and then ask what the camper will weigh loaded with gear. I have pulled a 20' bass boat in tandem behind a 21' fifth wheel behind a F250 also. As long as I kept the speed under control, it pulled well. Keep in mind you have to stop the train so allow plenty of room in front of you. Only issue is you need to watch the length limits which is 66 ft. in many states. You also need to be aware you are NOT going to back this train up. I have also pulled a boat behind a class A motorhome which was not a issue on the road but can be tight trying to back down a boat ramp. By in far I love the cabover setup. Note they are NOT cheap. Newer models also have very efficient A/C units that can be run on modern 2kW generators.

Most of the newer medium to larger models have a compartment just for a 2.5KW Onan propane generator to run the AC and/or microwave. Everything else can be run off gas or 12v. Just need the generator if warm weather camping without electric hookups. Everything else(refegerator, stove, lights, water heater, furnace...) can be run off battery and propane. Truck campers have come a long way.

361v is correct saying "Truck Campers have came a long way". My previous camper was a 2008 Lance 815 and my new one is 2016 Lance 825. All the lights are now LED which take much less power and A/C is more efficent. If you are going out for just an overnight stay when it isn't hot a generator is not a must. But longer stays do require other options. My 825 has a compartment that will hold my Yamaha 2KW gas generator just fine. Other option would be solar panels to recharge 12v batteries but come with their own pro's and con's. The medium to larger campers do have more space and features but also require a 1 ton dually to haul them. That is a deal breaker for me as I wanted a single axle truck.

I bought a camper shell so I could put a cot in the back and sleep in it. Took it to Rayburn 5 days. The idea sounded great. But in the end it sucks. I get back and just sleep but being able to spread out and watch some tv and take a good shower was a great luxury. I slept good the cot was comfy but that was it. Everything was crowded. A camper may be different. But I think just for fishing trips it's to much. Driving on curvy roads to Rayburn would suck. Can't drive 80 to get there. I wish I could find 45$ a night rooms. They are all 100. I may get a lot and put a camper in it.

You may need to look at the specs on new trucks and campers. I pull a 2011 38' Carriage Cameo with a 2015 3/4 chevy diesel regularly. I have an older one ton diesel dually as well but the single axle 3/4 ton truck handles the load better.

Yes a 3/4 ton will easily pull a bumper pull or 5th wheel in that length class. But note pulling a 38' behind a truck with a 19-20' boat attached will likely put you over the 66' legal length limit if you ever get stopped. By medium to larger campers I was referring to Cab-Over campers. Sorry for the confusion there.
