Our hot air popper gave up the ghost. Wife wants a stove top whirly type popper. We know nothing about them as far as what's best.
What do you popcorners use to pop some corn?
Thanks.

All you need is a pot with a lid. Add a little canola or peanut oil, about 1/3 up corn kernel, add corn to cover bottom single layer, turn burner on high, put lid on. When it starts to popping good, turn heat down to medium low. Continue to shake pot back and forth, crack the lid a couple times to let out moisture. Make sure to crack lid away from you. When popping almost quits, take off of heat and slowly remove lid angled away from you. pour in a bowl and season how you like. After a few times you can figure how long to keep popping until most kernels pop and not burn. Only takes a few minutes and the only way we make it.

https://www.amazon.com/Great-Northern-Po...+popcorn+popperI use this one and love it. Blows away microwave popcorn. You can also get away with any large pot with a lid, but I like being able to stir the popcorn as it's cooking. Seems like more kernels pop but that could just be me. I cook with different oils to give different flavors. Peanut was mentioned and it's a good neutral one, especially if you're adding powdered toppings. I also like bacon grease and unrefined coconut oil (like movie theaters use).

Stove top is far better than nuked. We have the Lindy stainless steel that has a crank. It works great, fast and easy clean up. Will never go back.

I'm on my second thick wall eight quart aluminum pot dedicated to popcorn.
Use fresh popcorn and keep it in an air tight jar. Use corn oil, popcorn salt, and one stick of butter. Get the pan hot, add corn oil, popcorn sufficient to cover the bottom with a layer and sprinkle with popcorn salt. Cover and shake over high heat until popping slows to less than one pop per second and take the pot off the burner and dump the popcorn in a large bowl. Drop a stick of butter in the hot pan and shake it around to let it melt and wash down the bottom of the pan then pour half of it over the popcorn and stir, then add the other half and stir again. Grab a double handful of popcorn and throw it in the pot. Cover and shake it well to pick up the remaining butter and salt and dump out in the bowl.
Now you need lemonade and a good movie.

My dad would make a huge pot of popcorn on the stove. He would use about 1/2 cup of uncooked popcorn per pot. When he had heart problems, the doctor told him "Mr. D., you can have popcorn, but you can have no more than one cup of popcorn a day." My dad was astonished and said "Doc, I use only 1/2 cup and it fills a bowl 'this big'. That's more than I can eat at a time."
Dad didn't realize that the doctor was referring to one cup of POPPED corn.

Another story. When my sister was first married (in the late 60's) she wanted to make popcorn balls for Halloween. She did not know how much popcorn to use so she put the whole bag in at one time. Needless to say, it made a mess.

Always cook mine old school style on the stove in a pot.
Don't eat microwave popcorn, those chemicals in that bag being heated up are believed to be a cause of cancer. Look it up. Not good at all.

Since we're talking popcorn have to share this story. My dad would make popcorn on the stove using a big pot with a lid.
Years ago, my dad had to go to the doctor because of heart issues. Of course, the doctor put him on a diet. Anyway, the doctor said "you can have one cup of popcorn a day".
My dad was flabbergasted. He said, "Doc, when I make popcorn I use just 1/2 cup and it makes a really big bowl of it. I don't think I could eat one cup of popcorn."
Dad didn't realize the doc was talking about 1 cup of "popped" corn, not 1 cup of "un-popped" corn.
On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?
The answer is found in Jesus Christ who said "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
