I ordered a 5 wt fly rod and haven't even received it yet, but I am trying to learn all that I can while I wait. I was wondering if anyone uses furled leaders that are made out of mono or do they prefer the ones made out of thread? If you do use mono, what lb test would you recommend for bream, crappie, and occasional bass? I am a do it yourself kinda guy and trying to find something else to make besides flies while I wait on my rod to arrive.

There's tons of info on the internets. I used to make them for a good while. It's a soothing activity, when all goes well. I have found that leaders furled from 4 lb. mono area about perfect for 99% of all angling in this area. One could go down to 2 lb. for a more ultralight or up to 6 lb. for a beefier one. Personal testing will tell the tale.

Keebranch on here uses Furled leaders. You might send him a P.M. Good luck Fish On!

I'm a huge fan. For whatever reason many "purists" don't use them which makes no sense because furled leaders were around way before tapered mono.
I find that fly fishing can be a complete pain in the butt if you let it. At some point, having to constantly change leaders for the fly type you have gets to be a beating throughout a day on the trout stream. If you use a furled leader, you simply cut off the Tippett and tie a new one on to match fly size.
Another benefit is they turn over very well and are very forgiving.
I like blue sky furled leaders. If you will be exclusively using a dry fly, cutthroat leaders with braid are outstanding.
Be sure to by some leader floatant which will help if dry fly fishing.

Ive been using one that Hook Line & Sinker sent me to try out about 2 years ago, and i love it. In fact the older it gets, the better it turns over.
