Added a Helix 7 to my boat and moved my 688 DI to the front. If anyone has any good tips for a new sidescan user be glad to hear from you.
With this warm weather I think it's time to go fishing.

The best advise that I can give is TOW.
I'd start out at the ramp. You know that it's there, so go by and see what it looks like at the end of it. Go by some trees and see what the look like. Go by a rock pile and notice what that looks like. Grass -same thing. Figure out what stuff looks like before trying to interpret other things.
Another thing, bring someone with you so you don't run into anything. You'll be glued to your new toy.
Have fun and learn something new.
you know, nothing wrong with seven men who met on the internet going for a swim together

I have a helix 7 also, I think I'm just not smart enough to know what's what. But I still stare at it like i know what I'm doing.

I would suggest asking someone that also has HB SI to tag along.

With this warm weather I think it's time to go fishing. My suggestion, read the instructions very carefully, twice...figure it out before you hit the water...limit sidescan to 25 ft, each side and go by visible objects, so you can imprint above/below waterline in your mind! Good luck! Sides can will become your best friend!

Lots of good video available on Youtube. After I watch videos a few times, makes me feel like I've already done it myself.

I might have to go see Slade but it's not an easy option. Boat is at Pk and that is a very long drive. Plus, my HOA will not allow me to park the boat at my house so I have to spring for boat storage.

The main thing is make sure the transducer is set level. Match chart speed to boat speed (best to stay under 5mph at first)and start off with si range about 3x the depth. If you are in 20ft of water then set si range to 60ft. After you get an idea of what you are seeing then it will be easier to extend the range. The sensitivity will also vary from different depths. The deeper the water you are in the higher the sensitivity should be set. Good luck

You'll be able to tell when you're traveling too fast for the set chart speed because little black lines will begin to appear. I run about 2.9mph at idle in gear. I keep my chart speed at 2 or 3. One of the hardest things is trusting your electronics. When I first got my si unit, I'd go over brushpiles and they would look AMAZING, but I wouldn't see fish on the screen. I'd stop and fish just because it looked good, and guess what? No fish! Trust what you see. There is a learning curve, but it will be worth it!

Congratulations on your new electronics unit. Keep us informed how you like it and how it is working for you.
