I have a Freon leak somewhere in my system. I need to get someone out to do a leak check on it. It's about 15 years old and is an R22 system. If the leak is in the coils, is there an easy fix? I'm guessing that if not, it may be best to replace with a new R410A unit. I'm not looking forward to dealing with AC companies as it seems that a lot of them are shady.
Has anyone used Home Depot or Lowes to replace an AC?
Any advice as to what I should do or who I should call out to take a look at it and give me an estimate will be appreciated.
I'm in Collin County.

If it's 15 years old i'd consider replacing it. I've never used HD or Lowes for AC repair and doubt I ever will.

There is an additive which is a sealant they can add to your freon. Had that done three years ago on my lake house and it is still running fine. A buddy in the AC business used that on one of my home AC units two years ago and it is still working. He said it depends on the size of the leak. Fixes maybe 60-70% of the leaks. Pricey though I think his cost is $30 a can.

What brand is the unit?

I would call someone that services that brand.

HD and Lowes completely upcharge to make enough money for contractor and store as well. Can be hard to do but find a good a/c guy and your way better off.

They make a leak-stop product the mix in with the freon, but it is a band aid at best. The coil is the expensive part of your system, unfortunately.

I'd recommend Prosper Air to you. link They replaced all three of my AC units, compressors and coils this past summer after my house was struck by lightning. It is a family business, and their pricing was very good compared to the big companies you hear on the radio. They did high quality work too.

I was quoted $300 for a new line to be run. When I was quoted on my new A/C unit. They said they corrode if they are in concrete or underground. If it runs in the attic it's most likely not a leak in the line. Food for thought!
