One word seagar inVisix not the red label. Man i fish 7.5 foot mono tapered leaders then use a double surgeons loop to add 18"-24"invisix depending on water depth. Put the shot above the knot it stays in place. I fish bass tournaments conventional and fish a lot of plastic so I tend to rip lips on the hook set lol. I like having the little bit of stretch from the mono to prevent breakoffs. You get 200 yards of invisix 8lb for 18-20 bucks. Under 8 I use rio floroflex, but always 8lb invisix on sandbass. I can promise you will have way more fun with the four but don't shy away from getting a six! And yes Sabine is a very special place 2flyfih4 four went with heavy full sink and just a strait 2' piece of 20#invisix (water is muddy) and let him get flys back there because you will lose a lot.

That said, if you're lobbing a bunch of lead weight on the end, you don't need as much taper as the weight will carry the fly out for you.

Like Robert was mentioning, Invisx is the way to go, and yeah, if you go full sinking, shorten that leader up and use a straight piece with no taper at all.

I have a TFO Axiom 5wt set up wth a fullwells and fighting butt that I used to use for stripers and hybrids. For sand bass I use my 3wt BVK. The 5wt Axiom fishes about like a 7wt BVK. In fact when I got my 7 for Christmas reel came off the 5 straight onto my 7. Fishes well with a rio outbound custom cut at 250 grains. For floating line I had a 6wt cortland 444. Axiom and 6 wt line are in the closet. Will probably post on here when I get around to it, lol looking to replace it with a 5 wt BVK. But like everyone else I use a floating line and my 3 wt 95% of the time. The other 5% is for the lakes fishing deep below 20'. It's not pretty when you add heavy files and split shot to get deeper but with practice it's manageable. Only reason I would go to anything more than my 3 and a floating line is to cast bid heavy flies to get deeper than 15' and to fight the Texas wind.

Great info in this thread guys. Saved me from buying some sink tip line.

This thread ought to be made into the "official" 2017 white bass run thread.

It's definitely MY Official 2017 White Bass Run Thread.

Early on I decided that fishing would be my way of looking at the world. First it taught me to look at rivers. Lately is has been teaching me how to look at people, myself included.
