Went fishing under the lights at Lake Granger - Willis Creek last night using jigs under a bobber. Had two white lights illuminating the surface, and one green light under the water.

Not even a nibble. An no minnows were seen around the submerged light. Fished various depths from 1 ft to 4 ft. Headed to the microbrewery in Taylor afterward to drown my sorrow. nuts

Oh man! Sorry about the skunk. I have not been doing well this fall/winter either.

Thanks for the report!

I've heard mixing the light colors is not effective. Either green or white, not both. Never tried both before, though.

Yes, Brazos is my real name.

wonder if this rain we got has them back out in the lake maybe? seems like I remember reading about them running away from all the runoff after a big rain, but I could be full of it. thanks for posting an update regardless!

I've used both clear and green lights at the same time with great success, so my vote would be they were not there

The theory is that the water is slightly warmer in the creeks, which draws in the shad, which draws in the crappie. So the lack of schools of bait around the submerged light is suspicious. Sometimes when I go out on the main lake (in summer), there are clouds of bait around the lights.

Just a thought and I am not sure if its right but I feel that the crappie would be less likely to come up to the light in the winter than in the summer when the water is warmer. Most of the time in the winter, the water at the surface is the coldest (especially at night) and during the summer the opposite is true and the fish would rather come up to the cooler and oxygen rich surface. During the winter the fish would rather stay down in the warmer water. Same goes for the baitfish.

hmm interesting, I think that makes sense, but maybe someone with some biology schooling will come along and verify. I'll be heading up to fox's at granger this weekend and will report back as well

Thats me!!!

Because of the temperatures plankton tend to stay deep all winter, especially at night. Outside of winter plankton migrate based on light availability but in winter they stay in the warmer deep water and stay in a low activity mode. The reason lights work is they draw in plankton at night to feed, baitfish eat the plankton, and gamefish eat the baitfish. In winter there is not enough plankton near the surface to attract.

Would my submersible green light be of benefit in attracting bait in this cold water if lowered to the bottom.

Then why are fish caught as shallow as they are in creeks, sometimes in 1 foot of water? Are they just in transit to get to deeper holes. I have heard quite a few anglers claiming to have caught them with a jig just a foot under the float.

Lower your light to a foot off the bottom...if the shad show after 30 minutes or so, then it is working in your favor...otherwise go home and get some sleep....or go to a deeper spot and try again...good luck and keep us informed.
