The drop shot is just another way of presenting your bait to the fish. It does not have to be done with only spinning equipment or only on light line or only in deep water. When I fish the drop shot vertical on a school of fish right under the boat in deep water then I use spinning equipment. Most of the time I am either casting or pitching the drop shot and in that case I use a bait caster. Sometimes the fish want it suspended barely moving and other times they want it shaking quite a bit. You have to let the fish tell you which they want. My third setup for drop shotting involves 65 pound test braid, a stout hook and a 1.5 oz weight and I punch thick grass and pads with it.

A fairy wand, some 20 pound braid with 4-17 pound leader line, a sharp 2/0 hook and a chunk of lead on the end.

As for baits, I will put anything on it that I think will catch a fish, do not limit yourself bait wise, to what others hear, read or use that works for them.

When you guys say leader line on a drop shot where are you tying on your leader? I've just used 6-15lbs fluro then something a little lighter from the hook to weight so I can break the weight off if need be.

If you ain't first you're last.

Most use spinning equipment with a small diameter braided line as your main line because braid works very well with spinning equipment, then you tie on a leader of fluorocarbon, tie on your hook and then add your drop shot weight. Drop shot weights are made to pull off the line if they get stuck so you can get your hook back. The leader line is the same line from the end that ties to the braid to the end that the weight is clipped to.

Are you using a spin shot hook, a hook on a swivel? I can't imagine how you tie your main line to a hook then tie a lighter line to the hook also.

I really appreciate all the info sharing on this new to me fishing style. Hopefully I can post a good report once I get to try it. Thanks again to all.
