Hi all. I mostly fish for white bass/hybrid/striper, so I have never posted in here until now. I highly reccomend giving fly fishing a try if you haven't do so yet. The response of panfish to fly fishing lures is pretty exciting, especially the topwater action. I have a pond in my back yard full of panfish. The big ones are really weary of just about any artificial lure I throw at them on ultralight tackle, probably prefering just to eat the floating fish food I give them. Using a fly rod, I am catching way more big panfish than ever before. Typically I would catch no big ones on my regular pre-dinner fishing trips. Now I feel my chances are pretty good at at least one nice fish. Here are two fish I caught a few days ago. The bluegill is around 11" and the greenie is a little over 9".

Those are some nice Bluegill D.Miner! I fish with two very good fly anglers. Watching them is entertainment at it's best. They work an area of water with the upmost perfection while pin pointing each cast! It is amazing to watch not to mention it is a blast to see them fight a nice fish. Fly fishing is defiantly a GREAT SPORT in a class by it's self! Side Note: As for me give me my trusted Ugly Stick ultra light spinning reel combo any day! Just my two cents!

I forgot to mention how inexpensive decent fly equipment for panfish can be. It's not the setup in the pictures above, but I got a the Eagle Claw "Featherlite" fly rod and Cahill reel from Amazon for $25 and $13 based off a reccomendation in this forum. Throw in some $20 fly line from Bass Pro Shops, plus flies off Ebay (often $7-8 per dozen) and you can be fly fishing for easily under $100. The rod is fiberglass and super whippy, which makes catching 'gills a total blast.

Great fish and welcome to the fly fishing community! The Featherlight rod is a blast. My brother has had one for a while now and I just got one for Christmas. It is the 6'6" 3/4 wt model. I paired it with a vintage Martin 63 reel ($13 used off eBay) and caught 18 white bass with it my first time out. Casting it takes some getting use to if you usually cast fast action graphite fly rods, but I love it.

Yeah, the fly rod gets it done. The thing I loved best about fly fishing was fly tying. That's what got me into lure making.

Nice fish. I started fly fishing three years ago and love it. I have both a 3 weight and 5 weight rod. Picked up my first ever trout limit on the fly last week and had a blast. What weight fly rod were you using when you caught the Bluegill and Green? Again nice fish and a super post.
