I've bought a few to keep as starter reels for people who don't have a lot of fishing experience and they're not bad reels.

The $99 speed spools aren't bad at all.

Agreed on the $99 Speed Spool LFS. I don't have any experience with the less expensive Laser or American Hero Series.

My fishing partner has one of the hero series also and he likes it pretty good.

Yes. Function wise, I think they function close to the same as more expensive lews, the insides just aren't as good quality and probably don't last as long. I have several and they've been good so far

I tried Lews because Shimano changed everything I liked around the $150 price point. I liked the ESeries stuff. Then I needed to go to the Chronarch 50 at $200 to get a reel I liked. I can't remember exactly which model they were but they were $150 at Academy. I didn't really care for them. They weren't bad they just weren't great either. They seemed to cast inconsistently. It was like every once in a while that they were adjusted for a cast. Probably just didn't get the right model.

I ended up trading them off.

Trying some 13 Fishing now. Got them at Academy on discount. So far so good with them. Also picked up a few Chronarch C4I+ on close out at TW. Really like them so far.

I. Have lews, shimano and abu Garcia reels and use the lews reels more than the other ones. IMO hard to beat for the price.

In my opinion they are advertised on local fishing shows trying to make a name for them. The reason they are saying they are so good is because they get paid to say it. In a few years they will move on to a different sponsor and tell you those are the best on the market.

Over rated in my opinion but thats because I am a Shimano user. Even Shimano has lowered its quality on many parts and offer a variety of economy models.

I have a Pflueger I bought 20 years ago thats still a good reel, also a couple of BPS Extreme low profiles back in the early 2000s. They too are still good reels, ugly to look at but function great.

I dont think a LEWS reel has some new technology in it that makes it any differnt that any other reel in the price range they fall under. I am going to guess most of the parts in it are exactly like those in any other reel out there. Maybe the handle grips feel different or better but overall its reel probably Made in Korea
