Looking at trying my hand at Tenkara fishing. Does anyone know if there is any place in the DFW Metroplex that sells them? Or, is the interweb the way to go? Thanks in advance.

The few that I have seen in fly shops tend to run around the $200+ price range in her Austin area. To much for me. I went on eBay and picked up one for $65 shipped. It's served me well so far.

Its all in what you want to spend. I am a gear guy. When I got into Tenkara I went straight to the source where it originated, Japan. I found Tenkarabum.com and the wallet has been draining ever since. LOL. He has a wide range of rods to look at. There are many different sites to choose from now. My suggestion is to look at type of water you will be fishing most and start with a rod will serve you there. PM me and we can chat rods and Tenkara. I have been at it for over 3 years now and I don't own a western setup anymore. LOL. It's not to say I could never use one on larger water, it's just that most the water I fish is done with greater success on Tenkara. It's just too much fun!

I will recommend any of the Tenkarabum rods for use here in Texas. Handles smaller sunfish and trout , but backbone to take on the bass. Recently he has two new models coming this month. It will be available in the 33,36,and 40 sizes. Made by Suntech in Japan. These are great all around Tenkara rods!!

Orvis should carry. Not sure why Orvis doesn't get much love on this forum, yes the rods tend to be pricey, but they place a lifetime guarantee behind virtually everything they carry. I'm not just talking rods, but EVERYTHING.

Fly Fishing Texas at Athens usually has a demo or class on them. Be prepared to go buy one afterwards. I did. I went TFO.

I got several accessories on Tenkarabum. Rod case. Leaders. I also had my MIL make a case/sling pack for mine...like the ones in TB website. Nice to have when you want to carry it down river while working the 5 weight.

If you wind up going on the internet for a rod, I would check out Dragon Tail Tenkara. I bought one of their Hellbender rods this summer and I'm impressed. They have a 12 foot rod called the Shadowfire that looks pretty nice for $90. The TenkaraUSA rods are also nice but I feel like you are paying for the name for the same level of Chinese generic tenkara rod. As much as I love TFO, I waved one of their Tenkara rods around in a fly shop and it didn't feel like a Tenkara rod to me.

Moonlit fly fishing has nice furled lines. I have a tapered mono line from Tenkara USA that I need to get wet.
