I started with a 6wt rod and reel combo from Cabelas. Grab a couple woolly buggers and clousers. I've been doing it for a year and I learned to cast by watching YouTube videos and couple books. Practice, practice. It's addictive. I'll never go back to conventional rod and reel again.

Get an inexpensive rod reel combo, There happens to be a really good deal on a quality combo set on sierra trading post right now:

Cabala's and Bass Pro have quality stuff too. TFO is a texas company with great customer service.

And like Electric said, use YouTube, I taught myself how to cast through trial and error and youtube. Also be ready for those first few trips to be frustrating. Starting out you're going to hook more trees than fish. If there's a way to get your leader and fly line tangled you will find it. Don't worry everybody does it no matter how long they've done it, but once you get the basic understanding of things it gets much easier.

Orvis (who sells quality gear typically on the high end of things) has a great website for people starting out:

I just happen to have a closet full of old graphite and fiberglass rods that are inexpensive but fish great. Also a slew of inexpensive reels. I can set you up in a starter outfit complete with rod, reel, line, and flies. You'll upgrade if you enjoy it but if you don't you haven't invested a lot of money.-p- fish

If you are near an Orvis or Bass Pro store, they run free classes and provide the gear. Many clubs do the same. That will give you a foundation to work off of, and you may just hook up with some experienced fluff chuckers who will lend you some gear (if you haven't bought your own yet) and take you along on a few trips to keep you on the right path. Where are you located?

Big positive with Orvis is after you go to a 101 school they give you some significant coupons that make it much cheaper to get started.

Find someone fly fishing before you step into fly fishing area.
At lease understand the basic casting set up before you buy anything.
YouTube is a great resource!
Pm me if you want, I can give you some face to face training without charge and let you put your hands on fly rod reel and show you how to tie.
