Striped bass fish below Denison Dam on the Red River this past Saturday morning with Ryan Hildreth, Ashley Langford and Jeff McKinzie. First time for three of us, so it was an exciting recon mission with some great striped bass fish action. Ashley caught his personal best freshwater fish on the fly with a 26" striped bass; congratulations buddy! The rest of us got into fish in the pools and small runs. The bait chunkers made for some crowded fishing conditions, but still good stuff. We fished several various flies, but the general consensus was clousers and zonkers in size 2 or close to it. Definitely a place to go back and fish and a nice change of scenery from the Brazos River below Possum Kingdom Dam and the same distance! Looking forward to some more striped bass on the Red River below Denison Dam this year, especially when there is a current flow or even a generation.....then it should get really exciting! https://youtu.be/vCXCf21aiDY Tight lines.

That was fun trip. Was staring down a skunk and then hooked into that beast.
Looking forward to going back!

Nice video. I've caught a few small stripers below the dam in the last few months. First one was on a size 8 or 10 woolly bugger and the remainder have been on size 1-1/0 deceivers. Those same deceivers have also caught me channel catfish, largemouth, buffalo and goldeye, so you really never know what you are going to get below the dam.

Thank you gentlemen! I tell ya, that fog made for a really cool backdrop in the video; however, it played tricks with the focusing, LOL! Great group of fishing buddies on this trip and to see Ashley pull out his personal best freshwater on a fly made it priceless. Really look forward to fishing below Denison Dam again really soon. Tight lines.

Enjoyed the video, as always. I guess I'll have to add that place to my bucket list too.

As of right now I am planning on heading to Denison Dam to fish tomorrow morning. They are scheduled to start generating at 9 a.m. so I figure I could get in a few hours of fishing before then since the rain is supposed to be finished by 6 a.m. Tied up a few new flies I want to try out. Hope the fish are cooperating.

I saw a Fb post of a guy who caught a 16# catfish on a clouser. He also said the striper were biting. I'm planning on a Wednesday morning trip.

Rock On Ashley! Some where you can find the generation schedule for Denison, that would be really helpful for the striper bite. Might let Jeff know that the catfish are good, hehehehe.

Thank you Fray. How did you do yesterday McKinneyLonghorn? Inquiring minds would like to know! I didn't get out there as early as planned since I had a holiday party the night before and got home late, but I did fish for about an hour before they started releasing water. Only got one bite, a 14.5 inch striper that hit an olive/white clouser tied on a size 2 hook. Didn't see anyone else catching anything. Also, here is the release schedule. If they are releasing any water, the river rises too much to wade and the current makes it unsafe. Once they stop generating, it seems to take 4 hours or so for the water level to drop enough to wade. http://www.swt-wc.usace.army.mil/power/hydropower.html
