Remember that the flounder fall migration is flounder moving to the Gulf to spawn. What most people do not understand or know is that the timing is based ont he cold weather and the shrimp moving to the Gulf! That's right. The BAIT moves and the flounder follow. Although they spawn at this time of the year they time it with the bait movement. been that way for as long as there has been fish. Follow the bait and you will find the fish... On that note, all small at SWP. Gigged and fished and caught 2o small ones Saturday night and Sunday morning. All too small to gig but saw PLENTY on the banks. This weekend is the next front and it should last two days. Two days is enough to cool the water so that the shrimp start moving. Get your Gulp out and fish next week and have fun!!!

Here it is Mid November and more flatfish are showing up..larger ones also. With cooler temps at night and water temps dropping, the flatties will be moving out to the Gulf in deeper waters. The Bolivar Ferry area around the ICW and pilings is a key spot, TC Dike, Galv.Channel, all inshore drainage areas, SWP,Galv.Yacht Basin area, USCG Station (in certain areas) and eventually the Jetties near the rocks. As water temps drop finger mullet will get scarce. If you can catch your own..great! 2 fish limit....14" minimum

How about now? Flounders still stay put?
Why so complicated?

It has been reported that flounder in the 15"-18" range are being caught around G-town. These are the smaller males in the process of moving toward the Gulf. The Galv. Ship Channel and the TC Dike area (on the end-south side) have been producing. Most of the folks fishing the TC Dike are using finger mullet and/or mud minnows. Using your cast net to catch a few finger mullet is best, just take the time to stop near a ramp and snag a few. This way they are fresh and won't "roll over" on ya. I have know idea what they cost a dozen at the bait camps but I would venture to say $8-$10 a doz. Finger mullet need Oxygen....mud minnows don't. An aerator or an O2 setup, or tossing a bait bucket in the water will do. A flashy soft artificial bait will work if you throw arti's. and the go-to 4" Gulp New Pennies w/ Chart. tail. 4" Mullet imitations w/curly tails...red/white, white, chart, pearl/chart etc.. Bag limit is 5 until Nov.1st...then it's ONLY 2. No gigging during Nov. Good luck Sorry but I disagree. Most males only get to be 12" to 14" and usually stay in the Gulf. The females are the ones that get bigger than 14" and are in the bays getting ready to move to the Gulf to spawn with said smaller males in the Gulf and is what everyone wants to catch during the "run". I can give you Chester Moore's email if you like.

Females are starting to show at my dock @ the mouth of Copano. nailed a 2 fish limit yesterday, both fish were 19" females, & THICK! appears they've just begun egg production, sacs were very small. got them on my new favorite jig- a Chickenboy 3" flounder king in classic red/white tail on a 1/16th oz Rockport rattler in white. I use the smaller size because I find I don't have to wait for them to "eat it", feel the thump, drill 'em! finding them shallow now, 2-3' on grass & reef edges.

Yes, these warm temps have them still spread through the system (whether that is Rockport / Copano or Galveston) ... GOOD fish are being caught from the upper marsh cuts all the way through the ship channel now. It's finally gotten started at the ship channel but it's not gang busters yet... it's going to take another BIG front to drop the tide and flush the bay. But there will be some good fish caught now that it's headed in the right direction.

So the red marks are from them moving a lot? I caught some with the red marks and didn't know why they had them.

Sometimes that can be from dolphins trying to eat them. It could be from them hitting structure, rocks, or barnacles as well as they feed around structure.
