I use large baits most of the time. Crappie feed on anything they can get in their big mouth.

I've seen big crappie bite 4" shad while we are fishing for hybrids. They don't get big and fat on little minnows alone.

The mail man just brought me 100 number 2 hooks that is one extra long in 3/32 that I tie Reg. crappie jigs on them. The hook is 1 1/2 inch long so adding a 1 inch are even 1 1/2 tail is not to much. Over the last 40 years this has been a top seller for me in the South, but here is Texas not many people know how to crappie fish. I stopped selling jigs about 2 months ago but Pepop are Jerry here TFF can fix you up. These jigs like all jigs don't work everyday but when they do sure worth while.

All depends on the time of year. Fall and winter the bait is usually pretty big because there aren't very many bait spawns this time of year so the bait is bigger and the fish like big baits. Summer I personally have the best luck on small baits. Nice catch, don't be afraid to step up to even bigger, I've seen 6-8" crappie eat a 3 1/2" jig, nice catch!

My youngest son and I are heading out again in the morning. I might scour my tackle boxes to see if I've got any larger soft plastics. Maybe a 10" plastic worm will finally get me a 2lb crappie!

beautiful fish!
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

My personal best is a crappie I caught back when I chased ditch pickles. Caught on a 10" ring worm up at Ray Roberts back in the 90s. Was about 18" and 3 pounds. Had no clue what a special fish that was. Noted that a Dr Pepper can would fit in its mouth and that it was the biggest I had ever caught. Released it to continue bass fishing. What a young fool l was. Recently, I have been catching a lot of my better fish on the brush gliders. They are a much bulkier, full bodied bait that I think the larger fish are more aggressive toward. They catch their share of dunks, but tend to produce more larger fish for me. Just my 2 cents.
Preserving Texas fishing heritage one lure at a time.

If your wanting BIG profile baits, click the link in my signature and then select crappie baits. Check out the Super Frys (3.5") and the 3" Magnum Tadpole. I'm using a 2.5" bait now but as soon as the water starts to cool, I'll change to the larger profile baits. I know some that use big baits year round, but I prefer to "Match the Hatch" NICE SLABS

What a difference a day makes. Only fished for a couple hours this morning and only caught a couple handfulls of crappie between the two of us. Water was like glass with zero wind and hardly a cloud in the sky. All fish were caught within a foot of the bottom on tube jigs. They would pick it up either laying on the bottom or slowly lifting it off the bottom. It was a VERY light bite. Most of the time the jig would just get heavy, you wouldn't even feel any hit. Had a good time though and it was a beautiful sunrise! Headed to the Rangers game tonight to watch Yu Darvish dismantle the A's. GO RANGERS!!!

I once caught a 22" crappie. On Halco Max 130 Minnow. It was 1.5lb
Sigh... Fishermen...
P.S. There is no way 16" white crappie will weight 1.55lb. My personal best 15" crappie was well above 2lb. P.P.S. you are supposed to measure it with mouth closed. (Fish mouth that is)
