Hit Canyon on Sunday against my better judgement. Well, actually I hit Dunlap first for about an hour with only 1 bite and a few waves from wake boats crashing over the side of my boat so I loaded up and then went to Canyon at about 1pm. The catching wasnt actually too bad. I met up with a friend who was already on the lake and found some fish in some skunkweed so I headed over there and we caught a few out of the grass up to 2 1/2 pounds in about 4-6ft of water on moving baits. There were balls of bait every where.
We both started flipping big hardwoods and I picked up a couple more two pounders and then the biggest fish I have caught on Canyon in a while that went 5.22. My buddy picked up a 3 1/2 pounder and another that was pushing 4 pounds. We were flipping trees in 8-12' of water with creature baits way back in a creek to get away from the boat traffic. There are a lot of fish on points and brushpiles that can be caught on drop shot (so I'm told) but the window to fish those is from daylight til about 11, then the big boats come out and make it tough.
Went up the river about a mile south of Rebecca Creek and flipped more trees and caught 1 small fish. Frankly, it is not worth running up there when the lake is this full at this time of year. As I was fishing I saw a ski boat hit a stump right by me and he took some pretty good chunks out of that stump. The guy says "what are the odds of that, the river is 150 yards wide and I hit the only stump". I didnt mention that the river channel is really only about 20 yards wide and there are stumps every where.
I've been told the big smallmouth are starting to bite on topwaters near bluff walls in the early mornings. I did dropshot some points in 18-24' of water a few weeks ago and caught a ton of fish (probably 20-30 with 4 small mouth mixed in) and out of all of those only 4 kept. Most of my keepers I catch on that lake come from shallow water, but there is always numbers out deep.

Great report!
I cringe everytime I go up the river and wait for the "pop".

Thanks for the report ShawnT. I wish I would have read this report before going out there today but I had a good day out there as well. Still haven't gotten anything over 4 from that lake though lol Picked up about 6 fish total in about 4 hours (noon til 4). They were all pretty shallow but to be honest I didn't give anything of depth much of a chance today. Would love to know where you find those numbers out deep My smaller fish today came off a baby bass pattern square bill on rocky banks. The larger fish came in about 5-10' flipping trees with a green pumpkin red flake biffle bug in Toms Creek area. This was my largest for the day, came off a tree in 5'. It has to be one of the coolest looking fish i've ever caught, this pic doesn't do it justice.

Awesome, I've never caught a small mouth there. Sadly I think I've caught more crappie while bass fishing there than I have bass.
