I'm not very hi tech. I still use downscan and buoys instead of side scan and GPS trolling motors. Say you're idling along in standing timber... You see a tree loaded with fish on downscan. When do you drop your buoy? When the tree first appears or when it's in the middle of your screen? I'm set on high ping but don't really know when what I'm seeing on the screen is directly beneath me.

Remember, what you see on screen is past history. If your transducer is in the rear of the boat everything you see is behind you. as soon as you see something on the screen it is at or behind the rear of the boat.

Also, think about the wind. In my opinion, there's nothing worse than a bad bouy throw. I can't stand worrying about the buoy getting caught up in the motor/trolling motor constantly, and you need to be able to see the buoy at all times to use as a reference point. If I see a good spot on down scan, I mark it on gps, then head upwind toward it. When I see it appear on screen, I wait until after I've run all the way over it, then throw a buoy out directly behind the boat. This puts you constantly nosing toward the buoy to stay on the pile while never going past it.

What Jacob said, I always head into the wind while heading to my waypoint, then toss out after I've gone just a bit past my target... This still didn't keep my bouys out of the way this past Sunday on Tawak...The wind was blowing so hard, my bouys were drifting back into the structure and I have oversized weights on them

I agree. Mark your waypoint, face into the wind and idle up to, or pass over again and drop buoy. My GPS receiver and transducer are almost on top of the other at the back of the boat. When I see it appear on screen, I toss my buoy out the back of the boat.

Are there any buoys out there that won't keep unwinding line and drifting back? Or any tips/tricks to stop it from happening?
Drives me crazy. . .
When we pass the waypoint and see the structure, I try to throw out one buoy upwind of where I just passed. Then, go back around downwind, turn into the wind and pull up close to the buoy to pinpoint the structure and throw a second buoy out upwind more precise. Then pick up the first.

I have a pair of bouys that I purchased from Bass Pro that are in the shape of an H. They stay until it gets 25+ on the wind, but then I'm headed off the lake anyway.

I have the same buoys & don't have any trouble with them moving or unrolling, unless the wind gets really bad. Painted them black so they don't draw other boats to me either.

Those are the ones I use, and they constantly flip over and let out line in even a 10mph wind.

Thanks guys. That helps a lot. I had assumed that since the sonar signal was cone shaped, the transducer would be right over the target in the center of the screen. Then when I used the trolling motor to come back, I couldn't ever find the structure with the front unit. I'll try those methods this weekend.
