I need to install my new fish finder and would appreciate some info of pros and cons of installing the transducer in the hull. I do not have a flat spot in the bottom middle of the boat so will it affect the reading if it is offset from center? THANKS!!

A flat spot off to one side will be fine man. And if you're doing the thru-hull mount you can use duct seal to account for the angle and offset it. Most kayaks don't have a flat spot directly in the middle of the kayak.

Get a cheap flip-flop (if you have a kid steal one of theirs). Cut out a section in the general shape of the transducer, but about two inches larger in diameter. Then take the piece you just created and cut out a cavity in the same size and shape as the transducer (which should leave about a one-inch border around the cavity). The transducer should fit snuggly in this cavity. Use Marine Goop to glue the piece to the bottom of your kayak, making sure it is sealed to the bottom of the kayak so that the cavity will hold water without leaking. You now have your receiver for the transducer installed, just remember to put water in the cavity before you try to use the sonar. This will work fine in the center of the kayak hull even though it is not flat, and, you did not have to glue the transducer to the kayak. I did this three years ago on my yak and it still works perfectly.

I was looking at fish finders a few nights ago and the representative told me that mounting a transducer to the inside hull of a yak was 40% less effective and that the most effective way to mount a transducer is a swinging arm on the side of the yak. Any truth to this?

Any truth to this? Urban myth my good man. That subject has come up a lot. Concerning a GOOD hummingbird or lowrance unit... Do expect a possibly 3-4 degree temp lag. If Installed correctly with no air pockets between ducer n plastic with marine goop temps will only lag for a few minutes before reading spot on. (Not all units are 100% accurate anyways) The water in cavity helps yeild faster more accurate temp readings. Pings r also NOT effected when ducers are Installed CORRECTLY

Ok, so don't use Velcro to attach the transducer to the hull!!! It actually will give a temp. reading but no depth. I will use marine goop tomorrow and report results.

the goop will take about 12 hours to set up , I installed mine this way years ago. be very sure that your transducer wont move when the goop is setting up. make sure that it is sitting in a puddle of goop, and that puddle cannot run away. otherwise you will be doing it again. and doing it again really really sucks
