I have always just painted out of the cans that the paint comes in (worked fine for me for the last 5+ years). I finally went ahead and bought a PP fluid bed and LOVE how it keeps the powder "fluffed" up.
With my fist attempt at using it, I am not getting "as good" of color coverage, as I was with just dipping the jighead in the "can"??....
My question: Do you have to leave the heated head in the fluid bed cup a little longer or am I just doing something wrong???

No sir, fast in the paint. You were getting to much on at one time before, use more than one coat if needed but you will see its a lot better paint job now. I paint all of my jig heads white when they come in and store them that way. Helps on most colors.

There is a small window on heating the lead head just right before dipping. Too much and you'll melt the lead. Not enough and it wont melt the paint enough to get a good coat. When you dip the head, does it smoke and or immediately turn to liquid? I use a heat gun in a vise to heat my heads one at a time and it usually takes about a 7 count. And I usually heat and dip them twice and then heat again if the paint isn't fluid.

I have to heat the heads more when I use the chrome paint, to get a good shiny paint job. Those DO smoke, when they come out of the paint. I painted some smaller heads last night. They will melt quickly, if they get "to hot".

On my first attempt, there are actually "spots" where I can still see the lead of the jighead. Mark, try wiping the heads down with a towel before heating, and see if it makes a difference. I have ran into this a few times with the Fluid bed, and the dip from jar. best of luck

It does sound like your jigs are hot as need be. Barlow's tackle has a good alcohol burner for 14.99 and will do the best of any I have ever used. Mind started leaking yesterday and I ordered a new one last night. On my old one I used a 4 count which is about 350 degrees and is what the paint needs. Lead melt point is 626 degree so there is lots of room to do it right.

I just use a frying pan and hot plate to preheat my stuff before I dip it. Works very well for that purpose. Never have to worry about getting something too hot and it melting, nor do I have problems with not getting things hot enough.

I still prefer my propane torch. 2 or 3 quick swipe thru the heat and it will hold the powder and not get too much. Then cure. Works great and is the fastest thing I have found.

I'm have found that an alcohol burner works best for me, but only used alcohol burner and heat gun. I do dip, about 3 passes in the flame, and dip again. Usually 2 dips per head.

This is what I use also. Tried the heat gun, but didn't care for it. As an "update": I found that when I dip the head in the paint, if I give it a couple of fast side-to-side "flicks of the wrist", I am getting good coverage without having to dip twice or getting too much paint.

I just use an alcohol burner as it's more forgiving than a torch, but it's a clean burning flame and cheap to use. I like the one that Barlow's sells best because it has a good wick size which makes a good flame size. I use a counting method and I cut to 4 on one side of the head and then to 4 on the other side and maybe another 2 where ever. That count amounts to just about 3 seconds or maybe 3 1/2 seconds and I almost never have issues. I do make a fast swish from side to side in the paint and makes good coverage and out fast. I am pretty sure if I use a torch there would be drops of lead all over my area, lol!
Oh and yeah I hate the heat gun!

I use a Black & Decker portable electric countertop oven I put a piece of small chain from one side to the other and hang the jigs on it. I can get around 50 on the 2 pieces of chain. Just dial it to 350 and wait 5 minutes and start dipping. Hang them back on the chain to harden the paint.

I do the painting about the same as Skip, since Sunday morning have done about 700 that is bright colors. I use a white base coat, then the color, then a clear coat with flash. Each is cured as done and last using a top coat, question is does the top coat need to be cured? Not looking a fast way are a way to screw people around but the best way.

No matter how many different coats I put on I always cure the last/topcoat for 5 minutes or so at 350degs. in the oven.
