Give David a call at Shut up and Fish a call. He's on the form. He will fix you up and a great guy to deal with.

This is the best deal I've found in that price range (just a tad more actually at $849). It's the HB 999ci HD SI combo. It's got an 8" screen, down imaging AND side imaging. Plus it includes the HDI transducer. You have to be careful when buying DI/SI units. Some only have the standard definition transducer and the image quality suffers. If/when you want to upgrade, the HD transducer is $200-250 IIRC.
Sorry, link didn't work. It's at Cabelas.com. Humminbird 999ci HD SI combo for $849.99. Regular price was $1499.

I've always purchased Lowrance sonars in the past. I've just always preferred the Lowrance color pallet and I've never had a problem with them. Most recently I had an Lowrance Elite 7 DSI. Again, an excellent sonar and it served me well.
But... Side imaging is a game changer, and in order to get a Lowrance HDS unit with LSS you are going to spend $2000+.
I've had the HB 999 for a little over a month and it is a great unit for the price.

I'm looking at the Humminbird Helix 7 SI at GPS Nation. It's only $589.99 with free shipping and no tax. Looks like a GREAT unit!
Fly tier (yeah, I can fly fish...but the fish don't like frothy water!)

Hummingbird core units ( 899, 999, etc) are being discontinued for helix and onyx so they are being marked down, just have to check around for one on sale. As far as the transducer, if it is the compact you can send it to hummingbird unopened and up upgrade to hired for a small fee. I've seen 899 down to $499 recently. You'll get si, do, and gps for that

Elite 7Ti gets you into a excellent graph with full capabilities of SI, DI, Chirp, and regular broadband. 799 with total scan transducer.

REcently purchased a Lowrance HDS 7 Gen 2 Touch for under 600. REbates going on. Then all you need is the 299.99 ( I payed 250 on Amazon) LSS-2 transducer. Love it so far.
