In the late 80's, I lost the key (actually dropped it overboard without a floating key chain...lol) for my Evinrude 60 HP. I went to the marine dealership I bought it from. He had a board without about 60 keys on it. It was keys that would fit every Evinrude for that era. Of course, it was the last one we tried that worked-but it did work. Not sure if Mercurys were like that or not. Or don't know if outboard manufacturers stopped that practice at some point, but I would call around and see.

Rip, you can try my keys. Are you in Dallas area? I'll be around all weekend. My ignition is original 93 206. Had a 200 Merc EFI, but have 3L 250 EFI now- same key. If it works, you can make a copy.

I would hope that y'all didn't continue to try more keys after y'all found one that worked banana

I had bought a brand New Nitro and my wife and I were as far away from the ramp as we could get when I got up to go fish the stupid key ring holder thingy caught on my leg and the key snapped off in the ignition. Oh the Horror bang Went to the dealer thinking they would have to order a new key. Nope they had a box full of keys they were all the same.

LOL...I should have said that it was the only one left on the board that we had not tried, and it was the one! Thanks for catching that!

I keep a second key and kill switch in the boat. Loss of either one puts the motor out of commission.

there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

kinda like taking the plug out of your boat....sooner or later it's gonna bite you......

Amazing advice. ALWAYS leave your keys in your boats and never remove the drain plug. Simply amazing.

I bet if I told you to unhook your winch strap before you backed down the ramp, you would really think I'm crazy.....
tell you what, next time you are around an elite or FLW tourney, pay real close attention to the pros both launching and loading their boats...and ask as many of them as can if they remove the keys from their boat or remove their drain plug.....will say this, removing drain plug is getting more common because there are some lakes/states that require you to remove your drain plug....

Look on the switch where you put your key in. It may have the key number on the switch.
On the original switches the key number is on them. You have to really look for it.
It was molded into the switch.

Good Look!

I bought a complete new ignition with two new keys a while back....$40.

In Texas you are required to remove your plug when leaving a lake. Not to be a goody two shoes, but with all the CRAZY invasive species out there it only takes that one guy to do some serious damage.

Had a buddy who took his new boat to the ramp straight from the dealer.... unhooked completely... backing down ramp dumped new boat onto the concrete... to each his own....

Get the serial number off your motor and call a couple of Mercury dealers. knopf is right there's probably only 2 - 4 keys made for that model. Plano Marine had a spare for mine and they're not even a Mercury dealer anymore. Bass Pro may have them too. There shouldn't be any need to buy a new ignition.

I never use a float on my boat key, left Graham,Texas a few years back headed to Amistad with one on the key ring and in the ignition and was facing a strong wind, 6 hours later while launching boat and had no key in ignition, looked in hide spots, nada. Apparently the float sucked the key out in the high winds.Thought I had one in glove box but nada. A marine dealer had a used ignition switch from a Johnson that worked on my mercury. Since that day all I have in the ignition is the key and never take it out, but I have extra keys in every orifice on the boat. fish
