My name is Paul and I have decided I want to fly fish. I made a trip to Broken Bow,Ok, I did not catch a single fish but I saw how much the flyfishermen really enjoyed fishing so I told myself I gotta learn how to do this. I was telling my brother about it and he said he had some gear he would give me so the stuff pictured above is what I have. The rod is a White River 6 wt 2 piece but I got a very nice protective case to keep it safe while traveling. Plus I have several flys and some so small I dont understand how I can tie them to the line. The wading boots have a white felt bottom, I doubt that will last long. I still have to get waders but the most important is learning how to flyfish. Once I know what I am doing I plan on making a trip to Colorado and fishing three rivers on one trip.
Lets go fishing
Paul

The felt will last, however i think your 6wt is probably a little bit overkill for trout. A 5wt would be my max and I prefer a 3 or 4wt, that's if you can swing a new rod. Your best bet as a beginner is to fish a woolly bugger or a neer deere dropped under an egg pattern or bright San Juan worm all under an indicator. 4-5x fluorocarbon tippet is a must up there in my eyes, all you really need are bright eggs or San juans as an attractor pattern and neer deeres or woolly buggers as a dropper and that should get you started.

Thanks for the advice. I have read that the 5 weight is best for trout but this rod cost nothing and it is brand new. I have no problem buying another rod if needed, I guess I could just use this one here in Tx for bass. Is the reason the 6 weight line is too heavy to throw the light baits?

Welcome, enjoy the 6 wt it will be fine to learn with. It will be a good general purpose rod that will also work for chasing bluegill and bass in local ponds. Use the 6 to learn what to do and later get something lighter or heavier that matches how you are fishing. We all have our personal favorites and we seldom agree, but that is part of the fun. Good luck and have fun with it!

Oh, as someone mentioned, the felt lasts longer than you'd think. It provides good traction on wet rocks, but be careful on algae covered rocks and on muddy areas along the banks.

Welcome Paul! Fly fishing is basically the extreme version of ultra light fishing. You're gonna love it.
You're a good bit east of Dallas but you should try to hook up with the Tailwaters fly shop in Dallas. They have free casting lessons and would be a good group to get with. There also may be a Dallas fly fishing and tying group that you could learn a lot from....the Tailwaters guys will know about that. Shoot they probably have a free fly tying class/get together.
What rivers in Colorado are you thinking about fishing? Looks like you're on the right track to getting all your gear rounded up.
Have fun and tight lines, Jeff

Thanks everyone.
Jd I plan on fishing South Platte, Frying Pan and I cant remember the other one right now but it is close to South Platte.
I looked up the Tailwaters shop website, it looks like a place where I could go crazy buying gear and I do things like that if the items are in my hands.
I think I am going to buy a 5 weight rod and it looks like I will buy the Echo Base.
Lets go fishing

I think I am going to buy a 5 weight rod and it looks like I will buy the Echo Base. You have a 6wt, I'd suggest looking at a 4wt. A 4 and a 6 will covered a wider range of fishing conditions than a 5 and a 6. Skipping sizes allows you more flexibility with fewer rods. That allows you to delay how long it will take to have one or more of each size...

Gamblingman, I think the best thing you can do is get a lesson or two from Rex. I have been trying to create a youtube channel for beginners. It is not complete by any means, but I think you will find the videos there helpful and they will help you understand what Rex is trying to accomplish. There is a playlist of the Essentials and another on Learning how to Cast. They are not designed to take the place of a good lesson, but should be very helpful. Search Bill Gammel you tube or this should be the link. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxly4y6kgzSrerWEnGHUWBAThe two Echo Base Rods that I have are great, but I agree that if you have a 6wt I would get a 4 wt next. Eventually you will be like most of us and have two or three of each wt. Hope this helps Bill

Skip the 5 weight if you have a new 6 wt. Get a 4wt. Lessons are a great idea. Tailwaters is a good visit too. Google orvis casting.... videos of types of casts. The addiction is intense. The fishing is the relaxing part
