I was Right out of high school and starting college-- Choke was flooded and ready for action! I worked my schedule between work and school so I could fish her regularly Fished her many years with great catches and memories and was my favorite lake ! Now some refer to her as the "Dead Sea" . With all this rain in the watershed of the Frio she should be rising again ?? Anyone fished her lately ? Im fishing Medina and Canyon lake now and feel like I'm cheating on her Hope she doesnt find out !! Rio
My stringer is getting there!!

It's the only lake that has dropped during this whole rain event, fishing is better than it's been In years. I catch 2 or 3 bass in the 4-7 lb range every time I've gone this year. I have not been since mid April though. They seem to be hitting an odd color this year.

Not for a long time. My uncle has a second house down there and he was told that the footing under the ramp had washed out. Seems it's in seriously needed repair, they even had to drill into the Callighan park ramp and pump some kind of expanding concrete under it to keep it from falling apart.

I just checked and there does not seem to be any significant amount of water in the Frio portion of the Nueces River basin.

Any significant hydrilla left in Choke? No, you could put what's there in a 5 gallon bucket.

Headed down on Monday if I am lucky. Don't expect much but it will be good to check it out.
Old timer I was talking to down there once told me they "Corp" picked the wrong river to dam. Looks like he knew what he was talking about.

I guess I'd qualify as an old timer because I was down there looking at the river right there in Calliham while they were building the dam and all the river was was just a trickle, and I remember like yesterday thinking, "what is wrong with these fools?"
Actually I believe the main reason they chose the Frio was to protect the town of Three Rivers when the Frio went on a rampage during a flood, as well as provide water to the city of Corpus Christi by backing up Lake Corpus Christi. Three Rivers sits in the flood plane and is protected by a levee around the town.

There's a pic in one of the Mexican food restaurants that shows the town flooded, pretty impressive.

If it was built for that reason it is going to take one heck of a rain to flood it again. The way they keep draining it a massive hurricane will be the only thing to fill it again.

It's been a long time since we've had a hurricane hit the coast, and that is probably the reason the lake is in the shape it's in.

And yet again, the only lake that continues to drop even after being rained on.
