Anyone know or have theories about the stripes on some black crappie? I've seen it on lots of different lakes, so it's common. Just can't remember what biologists say causes it. Anyway, this one had about the widest stripe I've seen and even had it on bottom.

My grandad always told me it was the filet line. Had to get into the stripe to not waste meat. But my grandad taught me a lot of things that if I posted I would get banned!!!

I talked to a fisheries biologist and he said that in Texas it is a Blacknose Black Crappie. There is also a hybrid developed in Mississippi called a Magnolia crappie, but none have been stocked in Texas. He said they have a recessive gene are definitely black crappie.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Nascar crappie. Got a racing stripe cause they slam a jig then when hooked they speed off 0 to 100 towards open water. Catch them on Hubbard all the time.

That's a good one! I have been catching a couple on GV as well which is a predominately white crappie lake the past two years.
