I made a fish trap today out of 2 wire trash cans from dollar tree, the hole is approximately 1.5"wide and approx.4.5" long is this to big of an opening + is it legal to catch bluegill, shad and other non game fish for catfishing? Also I read that you are supposed to have a tag with name and address on it, is this correct?, and if so how do I go abouts doing it. Any advise on this, I'd be appreciated, also if I catch craw dad's do they make decent catfish bait, and do I need to remove a claw to fish them to the fish.

Check legality on Texas Parks and Wildlife. Baitfish are ok to catch just watch limits imposed in some areas. You likely won't catch shad in it use a cast net for them. Crayfish make excellent bait for jugs and trotlines. I use a permanent marker and plastic sign material for garage sales at Wal-Mart or Home Depot. Put all your info on and hole punch and small zip tie it to the trap. Keep several extra zips and premarked sign material with you in case one comes off. Check your trap frequently esp. in warmer water as mortality rates can get high in low oxygen situations. Live bait is great esp. when you catch it yourself. I remove claws on good sized crayfish. Big cats don't care though...they'll crush em and eat em up! Bass love crayfish but of course are not legal to keep when caught on jugs or trots. Hope this helps!

When you hook the crayfish be careful to stay away from the vein in their tails. Hook them in the back portion of their tails on the right or left. Don't hook in the head unless you want them dead quicker. You may already know this but in case you don't wouldn't want you to have a lower catch rate. Blues love crawdads and Flatheads will eat em too! Check trotlines, jugs at least every 2-3 hours if possible with live bait.

You can use minnow traps to catch minnows only. The size of the hole is listed on the TPWD site. It also states what you can catch in the traps. You can use a key chain tag you get at Lowes or Walmart and write in ink your info and it will be fine. Claws on are fine and better to catch fish.

TP&WD site says any non-game fish can be taken, but the opening limit is 1"X3" and a 24" max length. It also needs a gear tag which is good for 10 days from the date on it. Sounds like it's limited to minnows, shad, and small bait size perch.
