Got bored and built 3 crawfish traps to try something new! Now all I have to do is find somewhere to put em. Any suggestions off lewisville near the colony?

IDK squat about catching them. My buddy in east tx traps them. He puts the traps in shallow flooded bottoms. 1-2 ft or so. He uses fish carcasses as bait. He was actually using a minnow trap in order to catch the smaller ones for bait.

In South Louisiana we would put traps in calm, shallow, muddy water.

I reach in and grab a few when I see them waving their claws above water. Other than that I have no idea. :p

We used to use minnow traps and put dead or barely alive minnows in it. Shallow water. Next day it would have a bunch in it.

Just tie some bacon on a string and yank those mudbugs outta the water.
Theres a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot. Steven Wright

Just tie some bacon on a string and yank those mudbugs outta the water. Thats what we used to do in the creeks when we were kids. Bacon or ham on a string. Probably put some in your traps for bait.

I have a local pond I will go to at night and catch about a dozen in 30 minutes. I use a dip net or my hand. I would check on the bylaws for setting traps in a local/city pond unless you plan on sticking around and not leaving it for a period of time.

Ive checked and the only regs I can find on the fish n game site is for minnow traps. Called a warden to double check before setting them but havent heard back yet. I'll let yeh know what I find out after speaking to a warden.

Are you catching these to use for bait or eating them?

Waterways and creeks often run in behind shopping centers or through neighborhoods. If you can find some spots with heavy brush/snags or rock those types of places usually hold crawdads. I don't know if you have any farmland close by, but the silty drainage ditches that run through wheat fields and such are usually my favorite spots. Look for the tell-tale chimneys they make in the mud. I use whole bluegill in my traps, filleted down to the tail on both sides, but still all attached. To tie bait in my traps I use single strand coated copper wire. Most of the time I just use a dip net with fine mesh, especially in agricultural drainage ditches. The part of the net that drags bottom all the time wears out quickly, so I sew on some double thick denim or something on the frame of the net to protect it. I sew it on with braided fishing line that I save when respooling. Hope this helps! Good luck!
