Stop pushing political agendas. TP&W and the SLP are the best in the nation. With no other state even close. Statics and Top 25 Bass ever caught prove you wrong. Texas does not have single bass in the Top 25 caught, and Japan a country smaller than Texas that get snow/cold in winter has 2 bass in the Top 25 and the Largest Bass ever caught. California is the knock out winner of big bass ever caught...... It boggles the mind how people compare Texas to California and even Japan for that matter. You can't put an Indy car on a dirt round and round and expect it to win a race. The habitat is COMPLETELY different. I know this is hard for Texans to do but we have to embrace the fact that we might not be able to beat the rest of the world in this category. It's just not a level playing field. We grow 10 pound bass with the best of them yet only in the rarest of circumstances do we break 15 pounds. Until we do away with the status quo (i.e. Mike Frazier, Share-A-Lunker, or Dr. Schwartz) will we get outside of the box we are in and achieve something special. So if you don't know what a Punnett Square is than jump on the bandwagon and bash those listed because "you know better" or "you read it on the internet" but leave the biology to the biologists. For those who still don't realize WE ARE STOCKING MILLIONS of Florida strain largemouth EVERY YEAR in Texas waterways but guess what? That's not doing it. We need something else.... An X factor. But for now we don't have that. So choose to participate or not.... But give the soap box a rest. We've been here, done this. Respectfully...... The big difference between Cali and here is that those deep, bowl shaped lakes in Cali do not allow for the reproduction and recruitment of largemouth bass into the population. As a result very few bass live in any of those lakes. With very good water quality, a ready food supply, no competition and little fishing pressure, giants can grwo fast enough to get huge prior to dying of old age. The situation for Lake Biwa in Japan is also very different. Bass are an exotic introduction to the lake and have been able to take advantage of the unusual habitat there. PLUS....as has been learned in the production of huge 1 meter plus, multi-million dollar koi (carp), to get truly huge requires four distinct seasons. eternal summer won't do it.

So then what needs to happen is for somebody to construct a similar deep bowl lake here in Texas and stock with the best genetics the sharelunker program has.
Tom Bass Park lake in Pearland actually meets those criteria, and is rumored to have a few giants. Has never received stocking of floridas to my knowledge. I have seen a few giant beds there in the spring.

You know what drives me nuts about these debates? It's not the debate itself, it's the fact that this debate seems to happen once ever few weeks and no one is ever more informed than before. There is so much misunderstanding about the SAL program - on both sides. It's getting painful to read these threads.

I guess I have not been convinced either way. I understand their as been some big fish die for different reasons. I do not see any hard evidence that the SAL program or Texas Parks have killed those fish. I am also not convince it has really help the other lakes either. I will say this their is also no evidence it has hurt those lakes either. Their is a lot of opinions on both sides of the argument. I would say unless someone can show it defiantly hurts then we should keep the programs if their is even a small chance we are putting better genetics into theses lakes to help build better genetics for those lakes. The lakes that the fish came out of already have the genetics of theses fish and other big fish. We can put all the fingerlings in any of theses lakes or leave the fish in their own lake to spawn but without cover, and a food chain they are not going to live very long either way. I think theses threads make for good entertainment but taking one or two fish out of any lake no matter the size is going to build or destroy any lake.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_rp_t3200_1699.pdfThis is a study conducted by TPWD on post tournament mortality of bass at Fork. Predominantly slot fish. It's a long read but packed with good data. In a nutshell, larger fish cannot handle stress as well as smaller fish and their post release mortality proved it, again. Fish kept in a live well and culled for heavier bass died at the second highest rate. Fish caught and released died at the lowest rate. Just something else to consider. Maybe all these tournaments are killing 38.2 % of the bass they weigh-in? I'm sure that isn't helping Fork.

I'm sure it doesn't help. I bet we all have a story or two of being on a lake after a 200+ boat tournament and seeing the floating bass near the ramp afterward. This is part of the reason the small club I fish does paper tournaments. Sure, it makes for a much less exciting weigh-in, there is variability involved, and it stresses the "honor system" to the max, but I can guarantee you (without hard data) that paper tournament mortality rates are lower. I get it that it wouldn't work for big, open tournaments, but smaller to medium sized clubs should always consider it.

I wish our local bass club did this. They hold a weekly tournament, practically year round, a lot of stress on the fish.

200+ boat tourny. How about an 1800 boat tournament on Fork, there is a few of those each year. But if they are killing 38.2% of the fish under the slot. (the vast majority of the fish weighed in), would that help Fork. basically culling the small fish to have more food for the slot fish.

Japan has 4 distinct growing season, I have seen Tokyo (Narita) airport covered in snow many times in the winter Deal is Japan has 2 bass in the Top 25, Florida, Georgia and Mexico also have bass in the Top 25. Texas doesn't have squat For some reason Texas waters is just not conducive to grow giant bass

The bottom line is this...
That a dozen or fewer 13+ lb bass/yr live, die, spawn in captivity or not doesn't directly impact the quality nor quantity of big bass in Texas.
SAL doesn't cost the taxpayers of Texas a dime.
The attention (and increased revenue) SAL has generated around bass fishing in Texas, over the past 30 years, far exceeds any monetary contributions to the program.
How much does Toyota or whomever pay for it, How much do they pay each year? Does TPWD release Financial? I trust the TPWD as far as I can throw them....... Still waiting for an answer on this one.... Are there financial released? How much does Toyota pay yearly to fund SAL?

I think Lake Fork showed us what our max potential is for huge bass in Texas. It had the best of everything working in it's favor and it was amazing for a long time. Unfortunately time has worn away much of that potential and now it is what it is.
Our most limiting factor in Texas is extremes in temperature. Some years aren't too bad, but we normally have very hot summers and every few years we get a brutally cold winter with some extended periods of temps in the teens and even colder. This is stressful on the fish and not conducive to growing giant and long lived largemouths.
Fish of 15+ lbs from public waters may be a thing of the past now. Private waters like CB may be the only places where they will show up. However! These places are not immune to the weather. An extemely hot summer or more likely a wintery deep freeze could possibly wipe out or deal a huge blow to such a place. I have seen it happen in the past.
