I always try to learn something when that happens to me .... Were your hooks sharp? Did you get a good hookset? Was your rod the right action for that lure? Did you panic when you saw the fish and put too much pressure on it? These would be my questions to myself if I had experienced what you did. By reviewing the scenario you might be able to keep it from happening again. The cool thing is that you will get another chance eventually.

I caught mine. Several years ago, I was practicing for Bass Champs with a co-worker. About the second cast something slams my square-bill. Set the hook, rod bows and she takes off. I get her turned and headed towards the boat, and she finally jumps. I thought she was a good largemouth, because she was really light colored. My partner says, "Man that's a BIG smallie!" She gets to the boat still green and makes two big runs that tested my brand new Loomis Bronzeback to the max. He netted her and I couldn't believe how LONG this smallie was. Didn't have a cell phone at the time, and he didn't want the guys in the boat nearby to see her, so I had to put it in my memory bank until next time. I'll say she was over 6, cause I've caught 6 pound largemouths before, and this fish was bigger. My fish of a lifetime.

I've lost a few big fish and it always hurts at the time, I usually think about it constantly and cant sleep at night for a day or two. Most of us have to put in a lot of time and effort in between big fish hook ups, and then actually getting her to the boat is another big challenge. All the above is what makes it so special to tangle with a big fish. If we caught them on a regular basis it would loose that rush of excitement we all get. I know it hurts but remember there are a lot of fishermen that will never even hook up with that special fish and you've made a memory and a story to tell that will last a lifetime.
Every time this happens to me it just fuels my desire to get back out there and even the score.
 I've never been good, But I've been Lucky! I don't Lie or Exaggerate, but sometimes I remember BIG!

That is a bad feeling. When I see or feel a big fish on I loosen the drag rather than tighten it unless I have to get it out of heavy cover.

I feel your pain. Had a similar experience a couple weeks ago while fishing a tournament. I was fishing out of a buddy's boat, so I didn't have some of the things that I would end up needing. My buddy had been catching several fish on a frog, and I wasn't fishing one. After watching him catch several in the hours that I hadn't gotten a bite, I let frustration get to me. Reached down and grabbed the first rod I could and tied on a frog. First cast, decent fish blows up on it, I feel the pressure, swing the rod back to set the hook, about 2 more seconds of pressure, then the frog is supermaning back to me. The rod I grabbed was my Medium crankbait rod, not enough backbone to bury the hooks. Lesson learned that day, frustration makes you do things you would normally never consider.

I'm going to go against the grain on this one. I see a type of reaction far too often today that's not beneficial for anyone. I'm not going to contribute to the pity party being held for this event. It is better to have had a chance to catch a trophy fish than to have never had that chance at all. One can always return to the area another day and try again for the very same fish. Example: a couple of years ago, I saw the largest buck I've ever spotted on my property while hunting. I didn't have the opportunity to shoot him; I just wasn't fast enough getting the crosshairs in the right spot. I didn't get mad - I was happy I had the chance to see him and just know he was there. But, I did not go into tantrum mode and throw my rifle to the ground like an undisciplined child not getting his way.
You had an opportunity not often available and you blew it. Your response to what happened was an indicator that you haven't yet matured to true sportsman status, and you paid the price for it. Now you want others to feel sorry for your "misfortune"? Maybe you can ponder what transpired as you pay for a replacement rod/reel. Sorry, no pity here for this one....

I totally agree with this ^^^^^. Throwing your equipment around during a tantrum, well, you got what you deserved. Can't believe it took 3 pages to get to this point. You're blessed to live in a place where you can have such experiences. Shallow.

Well, at least you got the 'chance' kiddo.... haven't yet had that experience. But, not good to cost you a rod & reel setup... Seems MANY on the forum, have lost rod and reels and many other things out 'fishing' or going to/coming back from.  I've just 'chalked it up' to cost of going fishing. But my lost equipment (thus far) was not too expensive rod & reel that I accidentally 'kicked over the side' ....Lord, and a Worm binder full of baits that dummy failed to tie down when moving the boat. TIE EVERYTHING DOWN UNLESS YOUR PREPARED TO LOSE IT and WATCH YOUR STEPPING AROUND IN YOUR RIG !! God Bless Lee
