I will be making my maiden voyage to the coast this year for some redfish. The guy I'll be going with swears that Venice is better fishing and has a bigger average fish. What do y'all think?

Venice has a world of inshore and offshore fishing area. alot of it depends on what the river is doing.we catch a lot more reds in Venice and the size regs are better than Texas, 16-27 i think and you can keep more trout. if you're looking for reds i'd go there.

What time of the year is the best to catch some bull reds? I have always heard the fall is best. The river is lower at that time of year. We went in the fall of 2015 and caught a bunch of really large redfish. I love that place!

Venice does have a lot of reds, fun to sight cast fish over there. But one thing people tend to over look is the bay systems in their own backyard sometimes. Don't get me wrong. I like traveling to other places to fish. But in the last couple years our San Antonio Bay system has seen a huge increase in redfish. I believe this past year has been because of Cedar Bayou being opened. Last year alone I saw more schools of 100-200 fish, than I have seen since 2005. Here is a video I took while wading this past September. This school is probably 150 fish, all crashing shade. Down around Cedar Bayou this past fall huge bait clouds of shade ran the south shoreline.

I would disagree on the size part of the argument, but there is no denying that for pure numbers there is no better fishery than Venice.
I would take Galveston bay for size anyday.

For Redfish-Venice for sure For a ton of 12-15" trout-Venice For decent size trout 15" and over, Texas

Venice is great for going off shore. Nothing in Texas comes close. About the only thing better is fishing on the Pacific Coast or Florida. But in shore fishing, IMO, Venice isn't even the best in Louisiana. Other lakes and bays get less pressure and have just as many fish. I love fishing in Louisiana, that's where I grew up, but is it really worth the drive? I live in Texas now and go back maybe once a year. Its fun, but fishing in Texas close to home, wins in my book.

If your talking about a fall bull redfish trip
It would be hard to justify going all the way to Venice when Texas has tons of numbers of huge fish.

You can go to Grand Isle it's a little closer and there is mainly 25-30 pound redfish to be had its really great! Also cabins on the beach are 300 a night you can catch fish from the front yard but you can also get cabins in the $125 a night range just look up FISH COMMANDER CABINS or call me to get a room 8173767569 stay for a day or a month as long as it takes to catch a big one. I caught this Saturday night valentine's weekend...

If you havent been to Venice, then I suggest you go. Its the only way you will know for sure if your going back or not. I have been once, I would go back for the inshore fishing.
Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?
