My boss got me a very nice used G-Loomis CBR781 / 6'6" MED-LIGHT MOD-FAST ACTION Crankbait rod for Christmas along with a used Shimano Chronarch. Both are in exceptional condition and are extremely light. I took this setup to a pond the other day and made a few casts and noticed the rod is EXTREMELY soft. I have next to no accuracy with it and zero backbone.
I guess my question is, what s the ideal application for this rod? Squarebills, deep cranking, shallow cranking, or should I use it for finesse techniques since it can cast small lures a mile?

Throw a Shad Rap That rod is amazing at throwing shad raps! If you love throwing shad raps at docks and tight spaces like I do, then that rod is the best rod out there for that technique. I have the 7' model and it's a breeze for casting light crankbaits such as the Rapala Ultra Light series of baits and shad raps.

I don't have much experience with those lures so I might use this as a learning point! What line do you recommend? That's what I was thinking. I hate using spinning gear and this allows me to throw Ned Rigs and other small lure pretty well.

The lighter the better. I prefer 8-10# flourocarbon.

That rod has the characteristics of light or weightless tackle. Like was stated above Ned rigs and dropshot. Weightless Senkos also.

I would use it for small crankbaits, quarter oz. And under. Sounds like a nice setup, your boss is nicer than mine. I'm doing good to get pizza once in awhile.

I bet that would be a good rig for skipping, too.
