Has anyone on here ever sleeved a cylinder on their boat? I am just curious as to where you might have had it done and the cost?
Thanks Rich

I know for a fact that they have a Sunnen power hone to do cylinders with. They don't make better equipment for that purpose. Good guys and do good work at a fair price. They rebuilt my Mercury 200 a few years ago and did a great job.

As to the question about sleeves, I had a 2001 225 EFI Mercury rebuilt ( one cylinder ) that had minor damage at the top. We sent the block to a machine shop in Grand Prairie where they milled out the stainless sleeve and put in new sleeve. I put the one new piston and went with new rings and bearings all through out the engine. That was 7 years ago and engine is still running as far as I know. Cost around 2000 dollars Which is cheaper than a new power head.

My friend rebuilds numerous Mercury motors every year.
He sleeves every cylinder and puts in new pistons to keep from having any of the motors come back. Last time I asked he said they would add about 600 to have all six sleeved. He sends them out of state to have it done but once back in service he has very few motors come back.
Resleeving a motor requires heating it up to around 900 degrees and pulling the old sleeves out. Drop the new ones back in and when it cools the sleeves are locked into place. Honing is taking a small part of the metal off the cylinder walls to take scratches off.

do a lotta homework on whoever ya use.. ask questions.. tha machinist can make or break tha whole enchilada! My friend rebuilds numerous Mercury motors every year.
he has very few motors come back.
one in tha last 10 ta 12 years that i know of... 0 since he's hooked up with James in Tn. who is rapidly becoming tha "go to guy" by many stock and hot rod guys all across tha country and canada.... he has fixed a coupla others on his dime but not from his rebuild... some guys just seem to know a lot more 'bout their "broke" motors than tha builder as for how ta treat it!

Some sleeves can be pulled out but have a high risk of the block being warped where the sleeve fits and requires oversize O.D. sleeves. Most sleeves have to be bore out, then resized with a boring bar for correct interference fit, then the block heated to 450 degrees, then the new sleeves are dropped in, lined up on the ports and allowed to cool with clamps on top of the sleeve, then the sleeve is bored to size, top of sleeve height set, then match up any ports as needed, then finish hone to desired piston clearance.
