To quote the article:
Rehabilitating the aging dam, which is now well past its design life, wont come cheap. Corps officials estimate repair costs between $50 million and $500 million, depending on which method or methods are chosen.
First of all, why was a dam build with only a 50 year life span? I am tempted to grumble about all of the government's recent massive expenses but I try not to be political online.

Interesting read. It's funny that they mentioned the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pa. I grew up in Johnstown and of course not there in 1889 for that one or the one in 1936. I was part of the 1977 flood that devastated the city once again. Newly married we lost everything including several family members and friends that we graduated with. Hence the nickname for the city as "The Flood City". As bad as that was I could not imagine the devastation that a breach at Lewisville would create. Thanks for sharing.

That's cool. Small world. I spent many a summers camping at Prince Galitzen State Park. We go back every summer for two weeks to visit friends and family. I grew up in the west end section of Johnstown.

How much money does the govt waste each year? Seems to me they could find the funds to fix an extreme problem.

I am sure those bridges they are building over dry land in Fort Worth will solve this problem.

I thought about the same thing. What did they plan to do after the 50 years? The way I understand the article was that downtown Dallas could be under fifty feet of water if the dam fails. I just can not see it. Downtown is not in the flood plain. The warehouses along Riverfront Blvd. will be under water for sure.

50 years is pretty much the expected life span for that type of dam.

I looked it up and found an article from 2010 warning about the dam. Now-to get a committee together-6 months. To make a decision from the comittee-6 months For the managers to go over the committees decision-6 months For the managers to reccommend action-6 months. You can see why the article was in 2010 and nothing has been done. Our tax dollars at work.

They will have all the plans together and the contract will be out for bids when the dam fails.

Very troubling to read about the dire situation the dam is in now.
One of the first things to come to mind for me is there is so much we as a nation are challenged with to prevent those black flag waving goobers and all others on the planet that wish us harm from succeeding in causing significant damage and possible loss of life.
And the thought; the prayer, that they will never be successful in reeking equitable damage and the horror that we may have victimized ourselves through inattention or lack of urgency to a known problem.
Damn, and I mean literally damn.
