As fast as the sport of kayak fishing is growing I see so many people who just buy a paddle yak and pfd to get on the water. I have the opinion that those things are necessary to get into the sport but not all one needs. Not near enough focus is on paddle tecnique. I see so many who will struggle to even make a mile in a kayak. Paddle lessons will help a person know what to do in lots of diffrent situations. It will also help you use the correct muscles...not your arms. I think knowing proper tecnique is just as important as a pfd because it helps keep you out of the water instead of dealing with a bad situation while in the water. Just a thought. My father drilled, yelled and pushed me till he was satisfied that I knew how to use the paddle to both move us and keep us upright. He is the best paddler I know, now he is older and doesnt swing a paddle much any more but still can give me tips. Stay humble, know that you dont know and learn the skills from those who can teach you correctly. To give an idea...as a small boy my father and I would cover as much as 200 miles in 5 days. Today at texoma I have done close to 20 miles and offshore more than that. Its not because im strong, its because im trained.

Ok so what's the technique tecnique is not typed on a keyboard. Its taught by a professional instructor. There are many in the area. Im just saying we could all learn a bit more. My girlfriend and I have been paddling together for a year now and the entire time I have grilled her. Her and I this next summer or spring will take some classes together. I have paddled now for 30 years...and still have much to learn. The longer we fish from kayaks, the bigger and stronger the target gets and the water gets rougher. Im just saying its a good idea to try to master the one thing that gets you to where the fish are and not just master fishing.

How many of you have practiced re-entry? My guess is not many. These are important things to make sure after the catch we get home safe.

Pretty good description on technique here. CLICK It's funny when I can run off and leave somebody half my age. Not by trying too but just by paddling correctly. Also how many of us feather our paddles at 45 or 60 degrees? It really helps when paddling into a headwind.

Excellent advice. Every summer I plan to turtle and try to re-enter but never do. Need to make that a priority!

I haven't taken a paddling class in 35 years, good idea Christian.

Christian- I love that your first post was at 4:34 am! lol
I totally agree that the many of us could benefit from better paddle technique. I know I could! Since many of us don't have the time or funds for and real training, I wonder if we couldn't put together a library of internet links, articles, and videos?
I think I could benefit from some very basic stuff, I just need help discerning the good info from the bad. I have read articles about paddling technique, but man of them are geared towards touring kayaks. I paddle a ride 115. ad at 33" wide, I am guessing I need to make some adjustments.
If anybody knows of any good videos or articles, post them here!

Nice thread Christian!
I'd like to host a paddling technique clinic here in the store as an intro to techniques and strokes over the winter. Then we can schedule an "on the water" clinic for folks who are interested in putting into practice some of these new skill sets. What do you all think?
PS - we've got a GREAT instructor in mind! I know he'll be interested in a group program!

I think I desperately need a longer paddle. I am pretty much forced to use my arms just to get it in the water!!

I'm bummed because I can't remember the guy's name, but Mariner Sails hosted a paddle technique seminar last year that I learned a lot from. He taught us proper technique but also some cool strokes, like one that will pull your kayak straight sideways. I use that one a LOT now to get up next to a bank, etc.
Before that seminar, I never gave paddling technique a second thought, and honestly I only attended that seminar to support Mariner, not because I was interested in the content. That changed about 5 minutes into it. I would attend other paddling technique seminars for sure.
