If i bought a boat and the title and registration is good till next year (boat& motor) can I use the boat until the registration is up or do I have to get everything registered in my name right away before going to the lake? Thanks!

If it is already registered in Texas, you do not need to get new tags. I just bought a boat and the registration is good until the middle of 2017.

You need to register it in your name. Tags will remain same and you will get credit for current registration remaining.

You can use the boat now since it has a current registration....you have 20 working days from date of purchase to transfer title to your name without a penalty. Once title is in your name, TPWD will send you a registration renewal reminder.

Once title is in your name, TPWD will send you a registration renewal reminder. This is exactly what I did earlier this year. They will want the sales tax (if not from a dealer) and title fees. If you have a trailer, the DMV will transfer a current tag to you. That cost me $2.50.

Did the previous owner provide the Certificate of Number (registration card) to you? You have to have that or a copy of it in the boat to operate it.

Hey guys this thread has only given me one update( today???) So I've got the boat in my possession it's a 59 Smith Craft 13. It's a aluminum 14 foot run about/ fishing boat. The po did not give me the registration card, but that's ok as it didn't come with an outboard. I'm currently in the process of painting the boat. I've picked up a mercury 402 that I'm also in the process of rebuilding.I plan to title them just after Christmas, then register them sometime next year before either of them hit the water.

If you buy from an individual I would recommend not dating anything just in case you have a delay of some sort. Most fisherman understand this concept. Is it not following the letter of the law? Probably not but they will get their tax money eventually. The penalty fees from TP&W are basically just legalized robbery. Be smart if you are buying from an individual. Help each other out.

as far as the letter of the law once you buy it you have 20 working days to transfer without penalty an anything that is not factual on the pwd 143 an 144 is where they can charge you with a third degree felony it is better to do it the right way.
