I have the above mentioned vehicle and tow a 20' Skeeter. I noticed that it struggles to keep 75 mph speed limit, and also has a hard time on hills. It seems as though you have to keep giving it more gas, just to keep up with the flow of traffic. It also gives me terrible gas mileage when towing. Any suggestions on improving this situation, or should I just shop for another truck? Can the axle ratio be changed and will that help? Any input is greatly appreciated!

You may be expecting a lot from your half-ton pickup. What is the "terrible" gas mileage you are getting?

I'll echo what Jerry said, you may be expecting a lot.
What transmission do you have in your F150? Is it a six speed or 4 speed? Are you towing like you normally drive, just throwing it in "D" and hitting the road? I would try towing out of overdrive so 5 th gear if a 6 speed and 3 rd gear if a 4 speed, should help quite a bit if you have been trying to tow in OD.
Next suggestion, slow down, not racing.

How many miles, are you needing a tune up or any maintenance. My old 06 had the same set up and it towed my 18 and a 1/2 foot overloaded Triton without any problems. Of course I never intentionally drove over 70 but a few times looked down and saw close to 80 briefly. Most trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph. Rarely did I actually run with the O.D. off unless I was east of Tyler or on a lot of hills. Fuel mileage on mine towing ran around 12-13 mpg. But the 5.4 handled it just fine whether it was the boat or livestock trailer or utility with the tractor on it.

I bet we all have a different definition of what towing "just fine" is. I personally cant imagine a 5.4 dragging a 20' boat 75 mph in OD well, maybe on flat ground, I would expect it to go grabbing for gears on any hill and lug to accelerate on flat ground.

If that's all I towed and I towed a lot, I'd want the ecodiesel...with a good extended warranty.

5.4 is a piece of carp. I would buy a new truck. I never checked the MPGs when towing on mine but when not towing they were only in the 15-16 range. My Tacoma tows as well as my 5.4 did.

The late 3 valve is a pretty decent tow engine.

Only one I spent much time in was a 3valve in a F250 single cab long bed 2wd. It had 3.73's and still didn't tow worth a darn in OD.

Don't know of too many gas engines that do tow good in O/D. Most need a few rpms to run....with the exception of the ecoboosts.

Reminds me of someone that was complaining about their GM 6.0 not pulling his 5th wheel well, then his next words were he tried to keep the rpm's around 2000 to save his fuel mileage Some folks just don't understand.

Who said anything about taking hills in overdrive? I don't think any truck will stay in overdrive on a decent grade anyway let alone maintain speed. I've had both the 2 valve 5.4L in a 97 and "tuned" and I had a 3 valve 5.4 in an 06. guess you got to know what they like, or at least the both of mine did.

the 5.4 is kind of a turd the 5.0 is much better. my 5.0 F-150 FX4 with 150k miles on it, a leveling kit, aftermarket wheels and tires with the leather luxury package tows my 20' bay boat like a dream. holding 75mph is no problem unless there is a strong headwind My truck is for sale by the way

The 3v 5.4l has better low to mid-rpm torque than the 5.0l. Talk about an engine that needs rpms.
