Those small motors are a breeze to work on. Replacing or rebuilding carb, maybe a fuel pump, filter, and water pump are easy. I've presently got a 9.9 88 model year Yamaha I picked up many years ago for $300 and I've replaced the carb because of a cracked bowl. I also changed the reed valves and put a 15 hp carb on to convert it to 15 horses since there was little difference between the price of carberators, and everything else in the motor was the same. I've had a few small motors and they'll last a lifetime if you just do minimal maintainace, and keep fuel stabilizer in the tank. Look for Chilton's type repair book for your motor and just some common hand tools and you'll be all set.
Just one more cast!

That motor on a 14' will do just fine, I had a 14' flat bottom a couple of years ago with a 9.9 and with two of us it pushed us pretty good. With a 15hp and a semi v you should be able to get to those spots okay and wear out those cats.

If the motor is in good shape you made a good buy.
I have a 15 hp merc 4 stroke on my 1436(14 foot long 36 inch wide) flatbotom With a few rods and a 180 lb me in it it ran 29.5 gps, with me and a 240 lb buddy it ran 25-26. Rough water is your enemy.

redneck74z71 thanks for this post.
This is great info. I have been doing a lot of researches here and these guys know what they are talking about. I'm just getting into catfishing and glad to see that many of the comments that have been posted on forum have put me on the right track.
I just bought a 1436 and now looking for a 10 to 15 hp motor.

fish dont care what kind or how expensive your boat is as long as it is reliable and does the job. i would save up and get a 9.9hp like mentioned above above 4 strokes are nice but the up keep cost more and the price is higher. I still like my 2 strokes easier to work on. on my 12ft alumna i had when i was a 12-17yrs old i have 2 noter a 5.5 hp and a troling motor it would get me and my 2 friends mourned just fined they they were some big boys even at 15 there were 6ft and over 200lbs but yes you got a good deal if thats all you were asking at least i think so
