Does this unit have to be updated or anything? I bought it used a year ago and saw one at Bass Pro Shop recently (both gen 2) that appeared to be a different layout/program. Any help greatly appreciated. I really need to hire someone to show me how to actually use the unit properly.

You should update your unit to the current software thats on the Lowrance website. Since you live in ft. worth and if you don't mind the drive to Lake Fork, I would contact Lake Fork guide James Caldemeyer and hire him for half day training. http://www.officiallakeforktrophybass.com

4.5 update or whatever it's called looks way different than the older software. If you want to know what you have go to system settings >"about" and it will show which version you have.
