Just had my SUV inspected at the dealer. I left and noticed no decal. Called and they told me the new procedure id to have a certificate of inspection within 3 months of you plate renewal. So, my plates renew in December, which means I'll have to pay another fee this year.

No you will not. Come December, your inspection will be good till the next December when you renew plates again.

In the end you wasted some money.
If your registration was current and your inspection was expired you should have just peeled the inspection sticker off and had it inspected before you registered it. I had the same thing, my registration was still good but inspection was expired. I got pulled over for a speeding ticket, and before the cop left without saying anything asking if he could etc he reached inside peeled off the expire inspection sticker and said you don't need this anymore.

I did, but I never saw or heard anything about this change. Going forward I will always get my inspection in the month that license is due for renewal.

Not what the dealer told me. I need an inspection no earlier than 3 months prior to renewal of tags.

If you want to the correct answer I would call the DMV or your local county tax office. I had not heard of 3 month thing yet but new about inspections changing. I got my truck inspected when it was up and renewed the tags a couple of months later with no issues. Heck the wife had been driving around with tags that expired in FEB! lol I totally forgot about hers because I apid to renew online right around the time we were moving and after putting in for a change of address etc. We never got the tags in the mail and I didnt notice until a few weeks ago. Cost me $10 to get new tags lol. I dont guess she ever got pulled over becuase if they were to run the plates it would show as up to date. Just not what the sticker reflected at the time.

The dealer told you wrong. If your inspection expired before your registration, you had to have it inspected. And when your registration is due, if your inspection is current you will not need an inspection. Your inspection and registration will be due one year from renewal this year.

I'm guessing the 3 month deal has to do with registering by mail. For that the inspection must be in the "system". I had to go to courthouse with inspection advice to get registration as there was no inspection advice in the computers. They sent me a notice instead of a mail in form. This is setting up to be a disaster.

If you registered after the end of March then you had to get an inspection prior to registration unless the inspection expired after the registration. Both myself and my son's the inspection and registration expired in the same month and we had to inspect first. On my daughters the inspection is good for one month after the registration so she can register without an inspection and is good till next year. This is true for the first year only. In my daughter's case she can peel the inspection sticker.

Supposed meaning the legal way.
If your inspection is due before your registration you are supposed to get it inspected. You will receive a VIR (Vehicle Inspection Report) that you can take to the assessor when you do your registration. Right after the law went into effect I got my inspection and then went to the tax office and they already had my VIR on a database as well as my proof of insurance.
Right now a policeman can check your inspection, registration and insurance on his computer.

Just did mine online. Got sticker in two days. This is the simplest it's ever been. He will have to have it inspected again. Dealer is correct. How could you not have known about the change is beyond me. Oh and why anyone takes time to go to a tax office is beyond me. Took me all of five minutes online.

You can't do inspection on line! He is referring to the vehicle registration not the inspection. I always register my vehicles, trailers as well as boat online. Just to convenient now a days.
