Hey guys I caught fish on a shakey head on both casting and spinning gear, but felt like I landed more fish and had better hookups with casting gear. Maybe I was just using the wrong spinning rod and needed one with a little more backbone. Any of yall have a preference to your shakey setup ? I usually fish 3/16 or 1/8.

For those weights I'm using a 7' MH spinning rod. I've noticed a lot of guys try using the same spinning rod for all their finesse techniques, but in reality, a dropshot rod has a lot less power than a shakey head rod and I typically like a longer shakey head rod. My

That is all I throw my shakey head and drop shots on. I have a custom built 8' rod that is a medium/light rod with a good tip (LOTS). I have high rates of hook ups and landing, but mostly due to the custom rod, I am sure. Tried other rods and just didn't have the amount of feel I thought I needed. This is an 8' Shikari P803 that has about a 2.9 to 3.1 power (light side) and it also throws shallow CBs real well, too. Hope this helps. This subject was brought up about 6-8 months ago, if memory serves. Might do a search for it, dunno if it will show up or not. Hope this helps.
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I use a 6'7" falcon low rider XG Medium heavy, it's medium heavy but rod was made for weightless worms. Great sensitive and falcon is well known for years in bass fishing industry, one of the top brands in rods and they haven't gone to chit either and they not cheap but not 400$ for a rod.

I use a baitcaster for all my shakey heads. Anything under 1/4oz I use a M rod, anything over a MH. Both with a fast tip.

I throw shakey heads on a 7' MH rod. Tried a medium but it just felt too flimsy to be effective.

i use both a 7 ft MH spinning rod and 7 ft M casting rod for a shaky head. 3/8 to 1/2oz I usually end up using the spinning rod more but catch plenty off both

I looked at shakey head gear today in my Bass Pro catalog and was thinking of ordering some shakey heads. I've never done this technique but I noticed right out of the gate that these heads come rigged with either a 3/0 or 4/0 hook. That is going to be way to much hook for finesse spinning tackle, which is my primary tool of the trade. If you can make it work on the casting end I'd think bait cast would be the better deal here.....

I use a 7ft medium heavy tfo. TFO rods are a little under powered so it's perfect for a shakeyhead.

I use casting gear for shaky heads. 12 to 15lbs line. Has to have the right tip on the rod. Not to stiff but good back bone.
Thanks,

Several of the big name rod sources carry so many varieties and they often describe what each one is best suited for.
St. Croix defines its Mojo Bass drop shot spinning reel as 1/8 to 1/2, ML, the lightest range of its various offerings.
It has a MH offering with a range of 3/8s to 3/4 rated MH for $110 and that would better fit the heavier shakey head typical set up. By the time you add the weight of the shakey head itself, then the plastic, that larger weight category rod likely makes a difference.
Just as casting an object too light for your rig is a real pain and very frustrating, so is the polar opposite of casting and operating something too heavy, even marginally so.
I tried to throw a weightless large Grande Bass the other day on a 7', M spinning rod and it was way too much weight for an effective presentation. Yes, I could cast it a fair distance but it felt sluggish.

Good call. Plus it's always better to have too much rod than not enough. . .yea I know. . .that's what she said.
