I tried using the search feature, but didn't have any luck. I just bought a boat with a Humminbird 997C up on the bow. I turned the unit on this past weekend and it turns on, but the screen does not light up enough for me to see it clearly. I tried looking at it in direct sunlight and in the darker area in my garage with no luck. I can somewhat make out a few things on the traditional sonar when in direct sunlight, but DI and SI are too dark to see anything. Anyone have a clue what would cause this problem? Is there a backlight that can out randomly?

Hit the power button again after your unit boots up. See if a popup menu comes up.......adjust the backlighting accordingly.

I hit the power button again while on and I get a brightness adjustment, but it is showing it to be at 10.

The backlight is CCFL. It is not as bright as the later LED backlit models. The bulb may be weak. Additionally a CCFL unit is not a good choice at the bow since the display is tilted up for viewing. Does OK for 2D sonar and mapping though.
You can try a brigher SI color pallet to see if that overcomes the lack of brightness.
That is why there is a model 998c HD SI Combo. The "HD" means it has LED backlighting and is brigher than the previous 998c SI Combo and the 997c SI Combo.

Is it possible to upgrade the unit to the 998c HD SI model, but use the same transducer and power cords?
I guess the bulb is just weak because I can be a foot away from it in light or dark conditions and not be able to read it.

I had to rotate my bow and console units because the LED units are brighter. Now I can read both in sunlight
