Going to be spending 8 days down in south padre. I don't do much salt water fishing since I live in the Fort Worth area. I plan to be fishing 9 out of the 8 days that I am there and looking for some tips. I am an avid big cat fisherman and regularly catch 20+ pound catfish so I am planning on using my catfish rods. I plan on surf fishing for the most part and any ideas and tips for bait and rigs would be helpful. I know I could always catch hardheads and stuff like that but I'm more interested in the bigger game fish. Any tips help! Thanks

Get a few 3-5 oz spider wieghts, depending on your rods. Some 2 hook leaders from walmart and some 3-5/0 circle hooks. As far as bait nothing really beats mullet but skip jack, pin fish, whiting work well. On side personal note the quik stop in port isabel has mullet but they put fabuloso in trays on the bottom of the fish to cover up any smell but it penetrates the mullet if it has been sitting in the fridge overnight. Go ahead and smell it. I've never had a fish bite when I use that mullet. Or I could be superstitious and full of it you can be the judge. Tight lines bro! -E.

How as the fishing? I'm headed to SPI in a few weeks as well. My fishing guide says they are slaying them in the channel on shrimp.

Bunch of slot trout are being caught in the "ditch" I do not fish it unless people just want to limit out. I like getting people on their Personal best. I have been on big trout almost every trip this summer breaking 25" almost every trip and a few over 27". Redfish have been in super shallow water which is normal for this time of year. Flounder have been really good working drop offs with a heavy jig and Gulp. I have a few openings during the weekdays if any one is looking to fish.
