Struck me as odd that KVD was throwing a white hair jig on the final day. Growing up in East Tex I was told by the old timers of the day that blk bass did like them as much as say a small mouth bass. But, being young and raiding my Dad's tackle box on a regular basis we'd find old fly fishing hair jigs and rig them on a split rig(not knowing what that was at the time) just seemed like the thing to do, and we caught fish. It looked like Kevin was using a 5/8oz. or better white hair jig, is that fake hair or rabbit, and where would you get one..

Yeh. Kinda heard the same thing about them. Throwing something "different" when the bass have started to see it all. Would assume it was used like a swim jig or a spoon. But honestly have only used the big hair jig trying to catch sandies or hybrids. And even then no really good luck for me. I guess it all comes down to those guys using whatever it takes to get a bite on a lake with lots of pressure from the best anglers around. I'd guess the hair on the jig would just hold shape better and be more of a finesse type jig. If it was ALWAYS a great producer, it would be more widely accepted.
The hair used, I think is either synthetic(likely) or horse hair. With chicken feathers trimmed and dyed.

I saw some a while back made from Rabbit, super soft and great action when wet... TW's are kinda pricy, I bought 4, they should make it before the Skeeter this coming weekend. Ya think the fish at Fork would have seen about everything imaginable. I got some clean area's with pvc structure they should come through fine at.. We'll see..

Hair jigs are commonly used in cold water presentations so I would suppose KVD grew up with them. He is from Michigan isn't he?
The "hair" supposedly performs much better in cold water and some of the materials sort of pulse open and closed even with no angler provided action.
It would seem like a good think to have in the arsenal, even if only 3 or 4 different best colors.
Does anyone here use them over the course of a full season?

bucktail is most popular but there is all kinds and they come dyed as well, so you can tye any color. I have started to tye some of my own.I even make some that is a combo of hair and rubber.

Different hair for different actions. Straight deer hair/bucktail doesn't pulse. Doesn't have any action to speak of. But gives it the dying minnow look. Add marabou or feathers or synthetic hair and you get more pulse, breathing action and you can a slower presentation/lighter weight. With deer/bucktail hair your better with a pumping, quick action, schooling fish action. As many here I got into tying my own and kept wondering about different hair types and what action they have. I'm still learning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_MashqxbhM

About 12 years ago I lived in an apartment that had two really nice ponds with lots of bass in Carrollton, Tx. There were some monsters in there too. During the spawn season I would sight fish the banks flippin large hair jigs from Bass Pro with a 9' fly rod and reel. I would tie them off with about a 4' 20lb. P-Line CXX leader from my fly line. I would catch a ton of fish and a lot of really nice ones. I'll never forget the DD that look like a submarine that would always pick them up by the tails and just move it. I never got a hookset on em There were two reasons for this. One, I absolutely love fly fishing and to land one on a fly rod is a ton of fun and challenging. Two, the longer pole allowed me to flip without spooking the fish. Good times.... Can't wait to try this on my first boat I recently bought next year on the lakes.

Friend of mine ties his own out of deer tails. Catches a lot of bass here at Broken Bow on them. I use some from him that are light brown with a little orange in them. Very good for me in late fall, early spring and winter.

Hair jigs used to be the only kind we could buy - almost all were bucktail, either dyed or natural. The best colors for me were solid black, black/yellow, black/orange, and natural brown/orange. I used black pork eels, craws, frogs, and split-tails on all but the brown/orange, on which I used a brown pork craw. Back then, virtually no one used plastic trailers. They caught a lot of bass, too.....mostly from fall until spring. Summer meant plastics.

That's the one I would reccomend. These are high quality hand tied one at a time. If you find them in stock get em while you can.... these are the hottest selling baits on the market right now.

That's just insane good. Most of us have no chance of ever getting to experience that. That guy is just on another level. WOW!
