I am in the process of redesigning the electronics on my boat. I put a Xi5 trolling motor on and decided to upgrade from the HDS-8 on the console to a HDS-12 touch. What is crazy, the stuff that I have on the boat now probably does not have 30 hrs on it. But anyway, I wanted touch screen and wanted the link between the lowrance and the trolling motor. But then I started thinking, how much do I really use the HDS-5 that I have on the bow. For me, not that much anymore. I only use it to track a creek or ledge or something like that. What I decided to do this time is eliminate the bow unit. I will still use the transducer in the Xi5 but I think I am going to use a transducer switch at the console to select between the transducers at the back of the boat and the one on the Xi5. That way I can still drop the trolling motor and using the remote move around and watch the large screen HDS-12 using the transducer on the trolling motor. When I find something that I want to mark, I can mark it on the graph. I am adding the external ant and a NMEA 2000 setup so I can control the trolling mtr from the HDS-12. I think that I should be able to turn the HDS around on the ram mount to be able to see it from the deck if I want to see whats on the graph from the deck. Any body done this or am I messing up or does this seem reasonable. Thanks for input. Sometimes seem better in my mind than how they turn out in real life.

i use my bow mount constantly and I have a rote for my tm too. Tried the rotating the ff to see at front deck and it was a PIA. All that said it is really up to you. Maybe before removing, leave it off for several trips and see how it works out

I was without a graph at the nose for a while........ I hated it, big PIA. I would strongly advise against it, get a small one at least, doesn't have to be fancy.

depends how and where you fish. if you primarily fish offshore structure in deeper water, then you will feel blind without a bow graph. if you are a bank-beater or fish in water shallow enough to determine the depth and bottom composition with your rod tip then you probably don't need a bow graph. If like most anglers you do both and everything in between then i can't imagine not having a graph on the bow.

Fast and shallow no need. You should already know the contour. Structure fishing is important to have it up front.

I am going to fish deep water at least have a day; so I couldn't make it without the maps and the contours.

I just got and mounted a second HB 1199 on the bow and now have it linked to the one at the console. Yes, I use it....I honestly spend more time at the bow than at the console. Don't you? That's where I fish from anyhow..... God Bless

This is what I wanted to know. I guess later I will buck up for a 7 touch for up front. I think the HDS 5 is just too small for my old eyes and that is probably most of the reason I don't use it as much. I will give my setup a try but will probably find out you guys are right. Thanks for all the help.

Have to admit, before I upgraded, someone on here reminded me, "Just where on the boat do you do most of your fishing?".... , put your best fish finder there!! Made sense to me .... God Bless

Why don't you put the hds8 you took off the console and move it to the bow of the boat.

LOL!! You Go Lee!!, an 1199 on the bow(I'll try the I can't see the 798 unit to wife) TO OP I'm lost without a bow unit, being interlinked I can Mark from there and both units share info. I just hope when I die my wife doesn't sell the fishing and boat stuff for the price I tell her I paid for it.
