Do custom painted crankbaits make a difference? I mean, if you have three different shad patterns, will one pattern catch more fish than the other two? I have always wondered if fish are that picky.

I don't have any experience with them but in the muddy water I fish 80% of the time I can't see how it would matter

I'm pretty sure that if you put a pic of Obama on the side of your crankbait you would still catch a few fish. I dont think that fish really can tell when you burning a crankbait by them

Those super detailed custom jobs are solely for the fisherman.

I do think the paint has something to do with the catch....however it's not as much as most think. It's more about "matching the hatch" in size and general color IMO.
For example....I have several "crappie" colored squarebills that I smash with....switch to a diff variation of the same bait and nothing. Fish it the exact same way and everything. If you are just burning it then the detail wont matter as much....if you fish it slower and really vary your retrieve, color will factor in I believe.
If color didn't matter than we wouldn't have 40K colors of plastics....

I agree color is Important to some extent but the ultra detailed jobs aren't necessary. Sometimes it helps to stop and remember these are the same pea brained fish that will eat a spinnerbait, giant hunks of shiny metal spoons, a-rig, creature bait etc.

Sometimes small details will make a difference on highly pressured fish, like adding a couple sharpie stripes on them or something. Sometimes it makes no difference.
It's pretty much a waste of money IMO some might have other confidence though so go get them if you want.
I have been hammering fish on an old beat up crank and break it off and catch nothing on a brand new one of same color. Troll over to the bank and beat the snot out of it on rocks to rough up the finish and start hammering them again.
So yes, slight differences can matter, but yiu don't need an 80.00 paint job to accomplish it IMO
