I went to Joe Pool for my weekly visit with other senior citizens at Lynn Creek Marina. Joe Pool is up 2 feet and water is being released from the spillway.
The Bluegill were biting like crazy for about an hour around sunup. I caught a dozen 7-8 inch fish. Then they stopped. Most of the fish were caught in 3 feet or so of water. All the fish I kept were males. They were fat and healthy but did not look ready to spawn. I doubt that we will have a May full moon spawn event. It may be another month.
When the Bluegill stopped biting three of us started fishing for carp. We caught a number of 11 inch channel cats also. I landed 6 carp and lost about the same number. One buffalo was caught, but not by me. I have a new recipe for dough bail built around cherry Jello that really performed.
. Seventy five years of chasing the elusive sunfish.

Carp Bait Mix one cup flour with 2 cups yellow cornmeal. Set aside. Dissolve 1 package Cherry Jello in three cups of boiling water. Stir. Stir the dry ingredients into the boiling mixture. Set heat to LOW. Stir constantly for five minutes. Dump dough onto a cutting board to cool. When cool enough to handle place dough into a plastic bag and refrigerate. Mold into one inch balls around a number 8 treble hook.

I usually fish outside on the dock. I fan the area in all directions as best I can while avoiding the other fishermen's lines. The fish are not yet under the bridge much except for the deep hole near the bank. They usually go under the bridge after the hydrilla grows out from the bank. That dock sees intense fishing pressure. I need to find another spot. Another interesting point this year is the variety of fish I have caught. That includes bluegill, longears, green sunfish and warmouth. This is the first year I have caught green sunfish there. They are mostly small fish. I have not caught any redears this year. Because of the high traffic I have considered moving to the State Park, but I hesitate to do so because I enjoy fishing with the group that comes to Lynn Creek every Wednesday. If anyone knows another spot on Joe Pool that is good for sunfish I would appreciate knowing about it.
