I don't know who has the best but I know I am not pleased with my Lowrance's. The problem very well could be the guy pushing the buttons but I've done everything I know to do.

It's the structure scan module that you have to wire up to your hds 5 to have side and down scan. I have 7" garmins and had to buy the gcv 10 (their structure scan box) for side and down imaging on mine

Prob the guy pushing the buttons. These are from my Lowrance and I know Wayne has some great pics from his Humminbirds. If I was buying today I think I'd be happy with either Lowrance, Hbird or Garmin. I've never seen any Raymarine pics so no comment there.

I am kinda in the same boat time for me to upgrade my unit it is 7 or 8 years old now. I currently have an old lowrance and wanted to stick with them but others tell me that the HB has better side scan so I just don't know.

I am kinda in the same boat time for me to upgrade my unit it is 7 or 8 years old now. I currently have an old lowrance and wanted to stick with them but others tell me that the HB has better side scan so I just don't know. Lowrance has Side Scan Humminbird has Side Imaging Garmin has SideVu Raymarine has SideView. They are all good within their capabilities. Some just do some tasks a little better than the others. Your needs for the imaging technology should determine which would work best for you. Being familiar with the brand's menu system or your willingness to take the time to fully learn how to operate the units will reflect your results. The most important feature for units that have the side looking imaging technology is screen width. Get the largest within your budget. BIGGER is better certainly applies in this case. I have seen some very poor images from all brands and I have seen some very good images from all brands.

great-scout, that is a very good image! Mine seems to struggle past 80-100 feet. Maybe it's the deeper water. I'm usually only in about 20-25 feet deep water at the deepest when side scanning.

I have had low gen 1 gen2 and now a 1199 bird. in my opinion if you fish shallow water much the bird side scan is much better in deep water they are fairly equal. lowrance down scan is a little better. The hummingbird onix is supposed to be best one out there if you can afford it.
