I got fed up today. Crappie were gone from the shallows, but the bluegill weren't. I declared war.

I often go to my ultra lite rod with small spinners and chase bluegill when the crappie are not cooperating. Anybody that disparages bluegill fishing have never fished for them with ultra lite equipment.

A bull bluegill on an ultra lite rod and reel can be a ton of fun since they are extremely hard fighters. banana

My dad always said if bluegill grew to 5 pounds, bass fishing would be obsolete.

Agree with your dad Jacob. I've always said if bluegills got as big as bass, you'd never get them in the boat. They're sure good eating.

I didn't keep any today. How big do they have to be to make it worth it?

I like them 8" or bigger. The small ones just don't have much meat on them. Wider the better.

Yeah, I keep the ones big enough to fillet, and use the others for bait...

You bet I`ll filet them if I catch em big enough Jacob. Lake Fairfield has some huge Bream /Blue gills and I saw a post once where Ketchn got into some monsters at Amon G. If you have to just scale em and fry em whole might I suggest good ole Peanut oil , some Louisiana fish fry & slap ya mama if you have never tried it & When the Tails are Potato chip crispy ,with some homefries and you favorite Brewski you are GOOD to GO thumb
