I don't look for limits to be caught on this creek any more. The spawn will probably be over by the time it is fishable again. But you never know.... And if he did catch a limit, I would have posted it.

I was getting excited about rain. I didn't think we would get so much rain as to flood the creek and end the spawn.
I hope not. I guess we will see.
Shut up and fish!

This doesn't surprise me, that's why I catch as many as I can when I can. I have seen this happen a few times before durine the spawn. Therefore you want to load the freezer up when you can. Many pages back, I posted get em while you can, well this is why.

well dang.. I missed it all in the Yegua.. But that's OK I know of a few other places that might hold a few fish willing to bite.. this rain does set up good spring fishing overall that could last through May..

Ben, do you think this rain will bring the Crappie up the smaller creeks? I know the Crappie like to move shallow to spawn, so I'm thinking maybe Nails or Cedar Creek might be worth a shot in the coming months.

Yep,I forgot about Nails and Cedar. Something worth looking into. But I return to my truck with so much mud on me when I fish cedar. And I am going to slip and bust my rear end a few times. Plus I have never pulled a limit out of this creek. Some good numbers, but that's about it. I've talked to several who have caught limits, but it has never been that good to me. And when people do, it's a one day thing. Or that's the way I have seen it in years past from the stories I have heard.

The gate to Newman's Bottom is closed, and no public access will be allowed, as of 4:30 PM today March 09th due to flooding. Please contact the Nails Creek Park Office, 979-289-2392, for further details. We will update this post to let everyone know when the gate is re-opened.

I tell you what, when this creek is on a good rise, I don't want to fish it. One slip in this creek during these times could lead to death in a blink of an eye. Slip in and you could be washed into a log jam in a matter of seconds. You probably won't get a second chance. A small situation could turn bad really quick, just not worth the risk in my book.

3 to 5 inches of rain fell in the Yegua watershed.. I saw a rather large plump lady floating down the Yegua in a tube singing like a bird... it's over for the year up the Yegua.. by the time the creek gets back to fish-able the whitebass will be heading back to the lake..

Crappie fishing does pick up the slack left by the whitebass. Nails creek is a good bet for crappie and the easiest to access by boat or bank.. If I ever get back up there Nails creek is where I'll probably end up.. Cedar is always an option when we get rain like this but like fishytx says.. it's a muddy mess back there..

Lake level has come up a foot already. Level is 239.1. The dam is still closed at this time. I suspect they are allowing the waters to recede downstream before it is opened back up.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda hit the yegua on Friday when I had the chance, just didnt want the wife bored if I wasnt able to find any fish. I can walk all day to different spots to fish but wasnt gonna do that to the Mrs. She said it was fine lets check it out, but I know better, the whining could start at any time so better safe than sorry. Guessmy plans for hitting yegua this Saturday are shot, wife goes outta town starting Saturday morning for a week. Guess Nails creek is my best bet now? Get many white bass up Nails creek or is it mainly crappie to be caught there?
What lures are mainly used for crappie on the creek?

Jigs, generally the same color patterns as used for white bass. Water will be muddy so you may try black and yellow opposed to chartruese and white when the water is clear.
I would start with curly tail jigs and go to marabou if I still wasn't catching anything. The crappie were very close to the bottom around structure the last couple of months. Not sure what the pattern is now. Have the wife bring a camera and make it a nature walk with fishing poles, LOL!!!
