Upstream at Newmans is where the action is. I caught eleven in 1-1/2 hours. And I was fishing in the blind, I haven't been upstream in like ten years. The good news is, I saw a lot of fish swimming upstream and I saw a few spawning. It should be on this weekend. Lot of fish moving around.

She said thanks FF. Her bass was the biggest caught out of 3. Cold front really slowed down the bite. She only caught that one but im glad she hooked the biggest one, wont tell her that though.

Guess there were fish to be had at the creek today. Made choice not to make the drive there with the wife and get skunked. Never having fished the creeks, didnt want to drag the wife up and down the creek in the slop looking for fish.
Off Monday to so if it aint pouring rain im there. Good luck this weekend folks, leave me a few.

Good luck, you should do well. I was shocked to see that many fish moving upsream with the water still so cold. But they are there for a reason and I guess they are about to get down and do their thing. It is that time of the month to get it this spawning process going stromg. I always said the second and third week of March is when it's on.

I started my day at Irwin Bridge and caught one nice male before dawn on a jig and then decided to try fly fishing. There wasn't much of a bite at Irwin so I headed over to Newman' bottom.. I worked my way upstream hitting the deeper holes. I talked to Sam who was catching a few. I made about 10 casts and lost 4 lures so it wasn't exactly going well. I then talked to Shea. He gave me some great advice on lure/fly selection and a great place to fish. Thanks Shea!! I put on a spinner fly and caught my first white bass on a fly rod. Then I hooked something big. I was using my 5 weight with a 4 lb. tippet so I was just keeping tension on the line after I set the hook. He just kind of lumbered along without much of a fight. When I tried to pull his head up he went to fighting. I patiently waited for him to tire himself out but he never did. Finally, I got his head up and started to pull him up to the surface. As soon as the leader broke the surface he turned and made a run downstream. My line was starting to get caught in the branches so I jerked hard on line 3 times to try to get him to turn (A trick Doug taught me). Finally he made a quick turn and I lost tension on the line just long enough for him to spit the hook. I ended up losing the spinner fly a few casts latter and called it a day. It was a good day of exploring, learning and talking with fellow fishermen.

Nice report, J-Moe. Too bad you lost the big one, but it sounds like you had a good day anyway. I fished upstream of Newman's as well from about 11:30 to 3:30. Caught and released 3 fish total. All of my fish were caught in the first hour when it was still overcast. Spent the next three hours hiking, climbing up and down banks, and trying my best to fall in the creek. The creek looks absolutely amazing right now. Really clear water with just the right amount of current for these fish. I think the water is actually a little too clear, and fishing in low light conditions (early morning, late evening or even night) might be the only way to get a limit right now. Once the sun came out today, I did not catch another fish. Don't know how the bite would be downstream of Newman's, but talked to some guys who were dragging their kayaks back from the low water crossing, and they said they hadn't caught anything that direction. I'm curious if I ran into anybody from the forum out there today. I stopped and talked to a few people, but didn't ask if they were on TFF or not. I was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt earlier in the day, then an Aggie t-shirt when the sun came out. All in all a good day. There's just something about creek fishing.

I left at 11:00, so I just missed you. The water is crystal clear- but if we get the expected rain on Sunday night, that will change. It has been much better to fish early and late by most accounts. But Shea was continuing to catch them at 11:00 in a deep hole. He had the lure selection and presentation locked in. It was fun to watch, I learned a couple of things from him as well.

I was at Irwin long enough to make a few cast before I received a call that require me to leave, so I didn't get a chance so to speak. But I did notice that the creek has come up a few inches from the last rain.

The short period of time I was there, I had heard there was a guy at the low water crossing with a fly rod catching a few fish. First thought that came to me was Ben was down there fishing with his fly rod. Funny how fast the word gets around on this creek about who is doing what and where. Even though I had the wrong person in mind, I still think it's funny how fast information travels.

I made my first ever trip to Newman's Bottom Friday March 6th, fished mid-day from 9:45 till 2:30 in the afternoon. I hooked this freshwater drum twice, broke off at the bank on the first attempt then finally landed the fish on the second go around. I also caught eight white bass on this trip, all fish were caught down stream of the bridge headed towards the lake. I was fishing with a small YUM white and chartreuse curly tail grub, working deep in the dark areas of the creek. What a beautiful place to spend the day, looking forward to heading back to the creek with my son over spring break or sooner this week if I can. Thanks to all you fisherman on this forum for sharing your knowledge and experience, much appreciated!

Wreck-it Ralph Buffalo.. Fun to catch but they do not tire quickly and on light gear are a menace.. Getting one that size on the bank is a feat in itself.. congrats.. well done..

At NB from 2-5:30. Saw one fish run up to lure and swim away but in the end I got skunked. Hear thunder in the distance as I post this though. Hopin for some rain. Thanks to all who share tips. Certainly looking at the water, current, and presentation in new ways.
