And if you fish upstream of Irwin bridge, you don't have to pay an entry fee and you have to wear blaze orange, correct?

I believe that's true, although you may want to check with Nails Creek State Park on that. I think the last time the water was high enough for the fish to make it up to Irwin Bridge was about 4 or 5 years ago. It's going to be an interesting year for sure. Things should really heat up next week with the forecast for warm and steady temperatures.

The fishermen's circus will come to the Yegua when that warm Texas sunshine breaks through on Saturday.. The word is out and the flood will come. wink

The Yegua and Nails WMA are open to fishermen but you must wear hunter orange if you are fishing. You also do not need a fishing license in the WMA or the state park.. but you should have one anyway..

Ya the lady at the Nails Creek office told me I had to wear this orange vest that is sold at the park office or at Walmart. Do you guys think it would be better fishing Saturday morning or Wednesday morning? I'm debating whether I want to fight crowds Saturday. Weather looks good but I can only imagine how crowded it will be.

I would think next Wednesday will be even better as there will be 3 more fairly warm days and nights. And 3 more days for the water to recede and clear up some. I too have been thinking about going upstream of Irwin bridge. I was thinking about bank fishing, rather than in the Kayak though. That current was to much for me. I don't know anything about that area though so it would probably end up being a frustrating day of crashing through sticker briers with no place to cast or wade. I know someone who be a great guide but I would probably have to carry him on my back. Old fart!!!

It's called exploring. This is how I got to know the places that I like to fish. Set your mind to it and go for it. Every year it changes up a little due to log jams and so forth. Seems like I'm always chasing that one big honey hole. And they are in there, you just gotta keep beating the banks.

Problem is that I enjoy fishing more than exploring. Since my knowledge of actually catching white bass is limited I would likely miss the good spots and fish where they aren't. Walk back in with blood running down my arms and wishing I would have went fishing for LMB and Sunfish with my fly rod, LOL!!!

The tricky thing about the White Bass spawn is the honey holes will change year to year depending on water level and other conditions. If you're fishing a new area it can be helpful to walk around and note where other people are catching fish. That way when you go back the next time, you'll know a few spots to try. thumb

I've never fished for WB, but I do a lot of fishing for LMB. I am eager to do some exploring in the WMA and learn how to do this. Should I be fishing structure, breaks in current, eddies, etc? Or casting upstream or angled upstream and drifting jigs through currents? Should I look for slow deep pools between riffles and go low & slow? I don't know where these things like to hang out or how to fish for them.

I can't take it anymore and have to go. Do ya'll know if the trail way has reopened? Or Nails? Working late and keep forgetting to call the office there before 4:45. Also, do they still sell firewood at Nails Creek SP? Buddy and I camping Sat till tues...all company welcomed. Gonna hit Newmans for sure, Irwin, Nails and Cedar...been a while since I fished Cedar! I really don't expect much on sat and sun with it having been so cold...but hoping water will warm Monday and Tuesday.

Hey Naggler, been awhile, good luck fishing this weekend. I'm going to try to get out that way on Sunday.

jackh, no need to find structure for the Whites. Look for deeper pools, usually around bends in the creek, and slow roll jigs along the bottom. You almost can't fish too slow.

if you really want some adventure away from the crowd at Irwin bridge go here Google Map of Upper Yegua WMA Irwin bridge is in the lower right hand corner of the map where cr124&cr132 meet. I've pig hunted back there and that far back is a long walk from anywhere..

Trail re-opened today! I know what me and my kayak will be doing this weekend.
Changing the subject, but has anyone taken a look at Birch Creek? Would like to kayak a different creek with my son. It looks interesting on Google Earth.
